She has already made a lot of talk about her. The 508 PSE (for Peugeot Sport Engineered) is quite simply the most powerful production Peugeot ever produced. And if it does not sport the “GTI” logo as is the tradition since the 205 of 1984, it is to better correspond to its time. One where ecology and controlling CO2 emissions are more important than raw power and performance.
However, the 508 PSE seems to be able to unite the two worlds. On the one hand, its plug-in hybrid unit displays 360 hp, 520 Nm and remarkable performance (0 to 100 km / h in 5.2 s., 1,000 m from a standing start in 24.5 s., 250 km / h in speed peak), on the other hand, its CO2 emissions are contained at 46 g per km, its official consumption is 2.03 liters per 100 km, and it suffers from no ecological penalty. That said, it cannot benefit from a bonus either, its price of at least € 67,100 depriving it of its own accord.

The 508 PSE is therefore no longer an old-fashioned GTI. More a GT, capable of driving very quickly but remaining comfortable. Because if the chassis is firmer compared to a classic 508, giving it a dynamism never seen on a Peugeot, it also knows how to remain reasonably comfortable for its occupants. Not radical therefore. And it also retains all the practical aspects of this “5-door coupe sedan”, with for example a trunk volume not affected by the presence of the battery under the trunk floor, or 487 liters for the sedan (and 530 liters for the station wagon, because yes, the 508 PSE also exists in station wagon). A good point, when many competitors are losing capacity.
Exactly, let’s talk about the battery. It is a little smaller than on the 508 or the 3008 plug-in hybrid of 225 hp, or 11.5 kWh. This officially offers it a 100% electric range of 42 km. It powers two electric motors. One of 110 hp on the front axle, and a second one of 113 hp on the rear axle, which makes it a 4-wheel drive. You can reach 140 km / h in 100% electric mode.
If we add the 1.6 Puretech thermal, of 200 hp, we arrive at the accumulation of 360 hp and 520 Nm (the values not only adding to each other, the calculation is more complex). This power is available in “hybrid” driving mode, which favors consumption, or in “Sport” mode which always preserves a little battery (recharging via decelerations, or via the heat engine) to always have power. max. But at the expense of consumption. Logic.
However, when driving, our tester Olivier Pagès found that if the performance was excellent, especially the pick-ups, the 508 PSE was not a true sports car either, but a very, very good GT.
A more athletic aesthetic but not flashy
So what packaging for this 508 daddy in a hurry (and with a well-stocked bank account, as we have seen)? It obviously had to be distinguished from the rest of the range. Peugeot has opted for a livery that is more dynamic but not flashy either.
We find scattered on the bodywork and in the passenger compartment “kryptonite green” color inserts (front bumper, calipers, rear pillar, upholstery stitching, steering wheel), quite tangy, and next to the 508 logo on the hood we find this which will be the signature of the PSE models, namely the 3 parallel claws, also green. The chassis is lowered by 4 mm and the tracks are widened (+ 24 mm at the front, + 12 mm at the rear), and piloted suspension is standard.
The grille is also specific but the most original are the small fins that can be seen on the sides of the front bumper, in front of the rear wheels and on each side of the air extractor. They remain discreet, however.
In the passenger compartment, apart from a few menus specific to hybridization, the stitching and the 3 scratches on the steering wheel, there is nothing to distinguish the PSE from another 508. Almost a shame.
For the hefty price of € 67,100, the equipment is fortunately complete. There is everything a 508 can offer (smartphone connectivity, level 2 autonomous driving, night vision, 360 ° camera, massage seats, etc.)

PROSPECTIVE RELIABILITY
The second generation of the 508 is already a few years old, but this PSE version has just arrived on the market. So talking about its reliability would be risky, except to do a little foresight.
We already know that the “normal” 508 has made a pretty good start in life, with some electronic bugs, noise from furniture or bad body alignment to be noted. But mechanically, not much to say. This PSE version uses the 1.6 Puretech in a 200 hp version, quite recent but which has normally solved its timing chain concerns for a long time. And the electric part should prove to be quite reliable, like everything electric on all cars.
Indeed, electric motor and batteries have been reliable and reliable technologies for decades on paper. Let’s just hope that the operation of a heat engine and two electric motors in competition is well managed, which seems to be the case according to our tester Olivier Pagès. The future will tell if everything ages well.
