The capital of Texas, Austin, hosts the annual SXSW festival dedicated to futuristic and science fiction films, where, in addition to films, various interesting gadgets and technologies are presented to the public. This time the “highlight” of the festival was the dream of any fan of the Star Wars franchise – a lightsaber.
A curious gadget was presented at the film festival by Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks and Experiences. Of course, it is still unrealistic to create a real analogue, since modern technologies simply have not grown up to this. Scientists say that the main problem for creating a sword “like from Star Wars” is the impossibility of controlling plasma energy and many more scientific inconsistencies.
The Disney lightsaber is powered by a flexible plastic that wraps around two spools inside the handle. When activated, the motor pushes the plastic out of the handle, and the cap connects them at the end. This creates the effect of the appearance of a blade from the handle, as in the films of the franchise and for the first time Disney showed it two years ago. Although the company is constantly improving its gadget, they, of course, cannot cut anything, and it is contraindicated to arrange duels.

It took almost six years to bring its development to the state of a spectacular model for Disney Imagineering. But now the lightsaber is equipped with various sound effects and can change color.
Unfortunately, the movie giant does not sell the gadget, and only guests of the Galactic Starcruiser amusement park can try it. With a two-day package ranging from $4,800 to $6,000 for four, fans of the franchise can live on a Star Wars spaceship and participate in activities such as lightsaber training, visiting planet Batu from Galaxy’s Edge Park, and interacting with characters from the Star Wars universe. The hotel is scheduled to open in summer 2023.
