In response to the petition, Zelensky said that the issue needs to be carefully considered both in terms of the historical and cultural context and international legal consequences.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has responded to a petition to rename the Russian Federation to Muscovy. This is stated on the President’s website.
So, according to Zelensky, he instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmygal to work on this issue with the involvement of scientific institutions. He also stated that the president asked to be notified of the results to him and the author of the petition.
“Thus, the issue raised in the petition requires careful study both in the plane of the historical and cultural context, and taking into account possible international legal consequences,” the response to the petition says.
The President also noted that the names of geographical objects used in Ukraine, including those of other countries of the world, are subject to accounting and registration by a specially authorized executive body for geographical names.
It should be noted that the author of the petition, Shabolostova Valeria Alexandrovna, stated that Russia has existed for only 301 years, and its historical name is Muscovy.
“For 301 years, Ukrainians have been suffering from the lies of the Russian version of our historical past. By naming Russia, we legalize its lies and confirm that we agree with its version of history,” the petition says.
Recall that earlier the deputies of Lvov and Rovno asked Zelensky to rename the Russian Federation to Muscovy. According to officials, the country received the name “Russia” as a result of the falsification of history.
Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin himself entered into a skirmish with the film director, talking about “Muscovy”. Alexander Sokurov urged the president to “let go of everyone who no longer wants to live with us,” and also raised the problems of the Caucasus.
“Is the Russian people, whose interests you just spoke about, is it really interested in the collapse of the Russian Federation? Will it then be Russia, which was created as a multinational and multi-confessional country? Do you want to turn us into Muscovy?” Putin noted.
