A sci-fi thriller with Adam Driver in the lead role, 65, was released in Ukraine the day before. We tell you whether it is worth looking at the attempt of Hollywood producers to slightly speculate on the theme of dinosaurs.
The shooting of the film “65” was completed about two years ago, during the active phase of covid quarantine. But the release of the film was not given a “red light” by everyone and was postponed at least five times. But this is one of the few non-franchised fantasy thrillers designed to compete immediately with all the famous representatives of the genre. Here you have “The Descent” and “Armageddon”, and, of course, “Jurassic Park” in combination with fragments from “Predator”.

What is 65 about?
So, Adam Driver plays spaceship commander Mills, a pre-human pilot and explorer who reluctantly agrees to pilot a two-year mission in exchange for big money to help pay for life-saving medical care for his daughter, Nevin. When debris from an asteroid kills the other passengers and throws his ship to “dinosaur period” Earth, Mills contemplates whether to send out a distress call for help at all. But finding the only other survivor, a girl named Koa, who is about the same age as Nevin, the hero takes it upon himself to save her, because Koa’s parents died during the crash of the ship along with other passengers.
After collecting the individual remains of part of his ship, Mills uses the crumbs of his technologically advanced culture and sets off on a journey through an area filled with quicksand, huge geysers, life-threatening vegetation and many types of dinosaurs. But when the heroes overcome another danger on their way, a much bigger one appears: the asteroid that shot down their ship is moving on a collision course with the Earth. They soon find themselves in a race against the clock to reach the ship’s escape pod, die in a fireball, or simply get eaten by dinosaurs. And yes, it all takes place on planet Earth 65 million years ago, which is why the film is called “65”.
In general, the film can be called “edible” and quite watchable, but there is one significant problem: it has almost no plot. There is a main line – survival and every minute struggle for it. There is a sad story of the pilot that happened to him as a prehistory, but in the course of the film, the viewer simply watches how the pilot and his little companion run away, run, fall, escape and run again. At some point, you catch yourself thinking that these heroes are nobody to you and their fate is not so important, but it’s all because the heroes are not revealed at all. Does this circumstance prevent you from enjoying dinosaurs on the big screen? Of course not! But it definitely prevents the film from being given a chance for a worthy place among the well-known “representatives” of the genre.
In a word, the film is far from a masterpiece, but frankly, not so bad, if you do not take into account the tangible secondary nature and the absence of the main storyline. But the public has long missed such large-scale thrillers, and, in principle, is ready to treat this very secondary with understanding.
Should I watch the movie “65”?
Yes, if:
You missed dinosaurs, in the picture “65” they are presented in all encyclopedic diversity, you are a fan of the genre: even if disappointment comes, you at least tried
Not if:
You’re used to seeing Adam Driver in deeper stories. You’re sensitive to the inconsistencies of using genre templates for other purposes, and you’ll probably be ugly.
