The Tank 300 SUV is similar to the latest frame Jeep Cherokee, not only externally.

They say that in Russia, whatever you do, everything turns out to be a tank. But in relation to cars, China jumped us and made Tank the first. True, the realities today are such that the car is very much asked to be called not “tank”, but “tank” – in order to avoid unnecessary allusions.
A new brand from the Great Wall concern, which already has the Haval H9. There is almost no unification with him, although on paper everything is similar: a frame, a gasoline turbo engine, a two-lever front and a rear axle. As well as all-wheel drive with the connection of the front end with a clutch and a two-stage “razdatka”.

Unlike?
Outwardly, the Tank 300 is very reminiscent of the last frame Jeep Cherokee: the same silhouette and chopped forms. Unless the round headlights were supplemented with an eastern cut of running LEDs. Although someone will remember the forgotten SsangYong Korando of the second generation and its clone TagAZ Tager.

Unpainted plastic on the waterline is able to withstand impacts at speeds up to 15 km / h without consequences. I did not test this theory, but I was convinced of the off-road talents of the car.
Under engine protection, 224 mm is promised. The lower arms are made of steel and are not afraid of contact with boulders. Behind and completely continuous bridge. Add to that two interwheel locks and a downshift and it becomes clear that this guy is not for asphalt. Perhaps in the future there will be a transfer case with a differential to make all-wheel drive permanent. But for now, all the leading ones can only be used up to 80 km / h. This is the so-called part-time – it is not suitable for constant driving on asphalt.
The loft-style interior is a “concrete” panel slab with souvenirs from different countries. Ventilation deflectors, for example, were brought from Stuttgart.
The design of the machine selector is like a separate art form. The automatic machine is an eight-speed 8HP series from ZF.
All-wheel drive works up to 80 km/h, and the “lower” – up to 40 km/h. There are cross-wheel locks, an off-road “cruise” and a “power” turn function.

I confidently stormed a deep snow rut leading to the top of one of the Sayan hills – and never once experienced a feeling of anxiety. The tank not only looks like a Jeep, but also matches its talents.
The set of “iron” off-road arguments is complemented by digital achievements – several driving modes and a transparent hood function.
But much more I liked the power turn, which is called tank (or tank?). On slippery surfaces and low speed, the machine slows down the inner rear wheel, allowing you to turn around literally on a patch – like on some tractors.
There are six driving modes. Standard and snow (it is turned on with a separate button) are available for 4H mode. The rest – only when the downshift is activated.
Analog clocks and physical keys appeared at the request of our representative office. This immediately attracted other customers – in the Emirates and Australia.

There is only one engine so far – a two-liter gasoline E20CB with a capacity of 220 hp. With. This turbo engine is enough for a two-ton SUV, but no more. “Three hundredth” when accelerating to 100 km / h barely out of 11 seconds. But traction control is convenient, especially off-road – the benefit of 380 Newton meters is generously spread over a wide rev range.
Still less fuel consumption: 13 liters per hundred at cruising 100 km / h, albeit the 92nd, is a bit much in today’s realities. I could have saved a diesel engine, but the Chinese comrades associate it exclusively with utilitarian equipment. And the Tank, which marks in premium, is not supposed to. There is a hybrid in the range, but whether it will appear on our market is still a question.
Hidden Talents
Paired with a turbo engine, classical hydromechanics works. The eight-speed automatic ZF 8HP has long been installed on BMW and Land Rover. This box is well known, including its weaknesses. From the six-speed predecessor, she inherited a relatively small resource of the valve body. To extend the life of sticky valves, it is worth doing at least a partial oil change every 50–60 thousand km (although officially it is designed for the entire service life). Which is better to accompany the replacement of the filter, which comes as a single piece with a plastic pan.
Practicality is no problem. The folded backs form a flat floor. And in the trunk there are a lot of little things like a 220-volt outlet and all sorts of hooks and nets.
But aside from questions of durability, the machine pleases with the settings and the feeling of an unbreakable flow of power in all situations. This is also why the Tank 300 was a pleasant surprise on asphalt. You don’t remember the need for constant steering, as on the Land Cruiser Prado. “Chinese” does not sway with a sharp change of course and confidently follows the trajectory. Suspension steadfastly fulfills even the most terrible pits.

The starting price of 3.7 million rubles is shocking. But let’s take a look around. Crossover Haval Dargo X costs three and a half million rubles. And in the “base” the Tank has adaptive cruise control and all possible heating – while the top version for 4 million rubles gets only air curtains, seat ventilation, nappa trim and front lock.
Tank 300 turned out to be a solid modern frame without weak points. The progress shown by Chinese firms is impressive and disappointing at the same time.
Why upset? Because our UAZ could well look like this.
I had no doubts about Tank’s off-road talents. But the pleasant behavior on the pavement was a surprise.
