According to Ukrainian Ambassador to Japan Serhiy Korsunsky, Tokyo is revising its national security strategy for the first time since World War II.
After a year of full-scale war in Ukraine, official Tokyo has radically changed its rhetoric in relation to a number of the Kuril Islands of the Russian Federation, which Japan considers their northern territories. Calls for the return of Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan are already being heard at the official level. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Japan Serhiy Korsunsky spoke about this, TSN reports.
In December 2022, the country of the rising sun began to revise the national security strategy, in fact, this happened for the first time since World War II.
“First of all, the military budget is increasing very sharply, and in a few years Japan will take the third place in the world in terms of defense spending. Secondly, it will be re-equipped with ultra-modern missiles, possibly aircraft,” the diplomat explained.
Korsunsky calls the changes in the structure of self-defense forces conceptual. Moreover, Tokyo is claiming its right to launch a preemptive strike. Before, according to the Ukrainian diplomat, there was no talk of anything like that.
So far, the matter has not come to amendments to the country’s constitution, but a sense of general concern about current events is noticeable.
Over the past year, North Korea has launched 89 missiles, sometimes over Japan.
“Everyone understands that this was at the suggestion of Russia. All this led to the fact that Japan was forced to say that it was time to reconsider its exclusively peaceful position in relation to Russia,” the diplomat said. According to him, no matter how much you say the word “peace” – peace will not come.”
Recall that the Kremlin rejected the peace treaty proposed by Tokyo on the Kuril Islands.
Focus previously reported that, according to a journalistic investigation, Russia was preparing to invade Japan in 2021, but chose Ukraine. The Kremlin was preparing a special operation to inspire the Russian audience that the Japanese were Nazis and fascists. Plans were also reported to detonate a bacteriological bomb in 1944.
