The Ukrainian development has a greater caliber and range than the American GMLRS missile.
Even before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukraine developed and used high-precision Vilha-M missiles. Now they plan to upgrade the rocket. It is reported by The War Zone.
Vilkha-M is a modified 7.6-meter rocket for the Smerch MLRS. The flight range is 110 km, it is characterized by high accuracy. The publication notes that the range of American GMLRS is about 80 km.
The missile’s accuracy is enhanced by gas corrective thrusters along the body of the munition. However, there is no exact information about their accuracy in the public domain. It is stated that Ukraine continues to manufacture Vilha-M missiles in small batches. There are plans to increase the flight range to 150 km.
“Let’s put it this way, I hope, just in time for the widely anticipated date for a counter-offensive in the south towards the Sea of Azov,” Ivan Vinnik, head of Ukraine’s National Defense Industry Association, said.
At the same time, long-range missiles will be tested directly on the battlefield. Vinnik says that Vilkha-M will be much better than it is now.
The Ukrainian army uses its development during the battles against the RF Armed Forces and in a full-scale invasion. The missile modification program was launched in 2018. Since 2018, about 100 missiles have been manufactured. They were first used during the fighting in May 2022.
