If you want to oppose future urban radars, a petition has been launched. Explanations.
It is an article of law that is making its way, discreetly. In the bill “3 DS” (for differentiation, decentralization, deconcentration and simplification), article 10 proposes that communities (departments and municipalities) can install their own radars, and manage the revenues. The beginning of a possibly slippery slope, which the League for the Defense of Drivers denounces. The association launched an online petition, which gathers at this time more than 25,000 signatures.
In detail, what does this article 10 propose? To begin with, note that it is coated in a general context of decentralization. The State wishes to hand over to the departments and regions the management of the last national roads and of the non-conceded highways. On paper, it is therefore logical that local authorities can manage the speed cameras themselves on the roads for which they are responsible.
The door open to all excess
Except that the measure opens the door to drifts. Indeed, the municipalities will be able to recover part of the PV revenues. Suddenly, some unscrupulous town halls could be tempted to replenish their coffers thanks to radars which are used more to generate revenue than to encourage safe behavior on the roads. Radars could quickly proliferate. Especially since the text does not indicate that these urban radars will have to be reported to drivers, as is the case today for other radars … Last trap: in zone 30, which now covers the entirety of many cities including Paris, even a small excess speed can be invoiced 135 € !
