Sea-based shells are on non-nuclear submarines of the Black Sea and Pacific Fleets. Submarines seek to unify to save money, the command explained.
Russian submarines, including strategic ones, can be equipped with Caliber sea-launched cruise missiles. This was stated on March 17 by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, in an interview with the Russian Defense Ministry newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda.
The Kalibr tests were carried out on second-generation submarines, and now they can be put on almost any operating submarine, including strategic submarines, the military commented.
The next step is equipping submarines with hypersonic missile weapons. The Kalibr missiles are now on Project 636.3 non-nuclear submarines in the Black Sea and Pacific Fleets. “Caliber” is armed with a part of multi-purpose nuclear submarines.
The Russian Navy seeks to unify submarines and reduce the number of submarine projects in order to save money on their construction, operation and repair, the commander-in-chief added.
“Currently, about 10 main projects of submarines and their modifications are operating in combat formation,” he said.
The Russian Navy operates old submarines
The submarine forces of the Navy, according to Evmenov, are still operating submarines of previous generations.
“These ships have undergone a deep modernization, which gives them a second youth. They have become different ships with more advanced control and weapons systems, equipped with modern weapons,” the commander-in-chief of the Navy assures.
Nuclear submarines of the Russian Federation will carry out salvo firing of ballistic missiles
Nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy will carry out salvo firing of ballistic missiles for test purposes.
Submarines of project 636.3 repeatedly used “Caliber” on ground targets during a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, the TASS agency writes.
The Russian military also conducted the first tests of the Zircon hypersonic missile from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine of project 885 Yasen.
Recall that the Russian military leadership decided to equip the Project 677 Lada B-586 Kronstadt submarine with Kalibr, which began to be built almost 30 years ago. It will be put into service with the Northern Fleet.
Highland Systems, founded by Ukrainian specialists, presented at the IDEX-2023 exhibition in the UAE on February 21 this year a prototype of the Kronos unmanned submarine with a strike system of 6 missiles.
