It is necessary to approach the repair of roads in a comprehensive manner, otherwise they become dangerous, the department notes.
The situation with the repair of roads was recently discussed in the State Duma Committee on Transport. Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev reported that in 2022, 26.8 thousand km (+6% year-on-year) of federal and regional roads were repaired, and another 1.6 thousand km (+15%) were built.
It seems that the numbers are encouraging, but not everything is so simple. Auditor of the Accounts Chamber Valery Bogomolov, who was also present at the meeting, noted that where the roads are in excellent condition, the death rate increases.

High-quality coverage provokes drivers to go faster, and additional lighting, markings and warnings are not installed immediately. Bogomolov hopes that his remark will be taken into account.
This is not the first time that death rates are rising after repairs. Back in October 2022, the head of the traffic police, Mikhail Chernikov, noted that the smoother the road, the higher the severity of the consequences. And he urged to legislatively establish a list of mandatory work that should take place along with the replacement of the coating. This is especially true for roads with high traffic intensity – there it is necessary not only to change the asphalt, but also at least to install barrier fences.
