A 63-page report by the British government released on March 13 suggests that the global security implications of China’s invasion of Taiwan could be even more serious than the war in Ukraine. It is reported by Sky News.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in this regard that the war in Ukraine, together with Chinese aggression in Taiwan, threaten to shape a world that will be defined by such terms as “danger, chaos and division.”
The main assessments of the report, published in 2021, shortly before the massive Russian invasion of Ukraine, have not changed, but now the representatives of the UK are describing all this in harsher terms.
Sunak called the Chinese Communist Party “an era-shaping challenge”, whereas before it was only a “system challenge”.
“Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine, weaponization of energy and food supplies, irresponsible nuclear rhetoric, combined with China’s more aggressive stance in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait, threaten to shape a world that will be defined by such words as danger, devastation and division is a global order that favors authoritarianism,” he wrote in the preface to the report.
Due to rising threats, Sunak announced that spending on the UK’s nuclear forces and submarine fleet will increase by an additional £3bn (€3.4bn) over the next two years. Another 1.9 billion (2.15 billion euros) will be allocated for ammunition stockpiles.
London plans to increase its defense budget to 2.5% of its GDP.
Representatives of Great Britain give a disappointing forecast regarding the international security situation for the next few years.
“Threats to the state will increase, they will be different across Europe and beyond. The risk of escalation is now higher than at any time in the past few decades,” the report says, which also notes that an increasing variety of systems are being developed, tested and adapted weapons.
Recall that China launched two of the latest Type 052D destroyers. The ships belong to the fourth generation of PLA Navy destroyers.
