Many people think that the motor will pull better this way.

How exactly the air conditioner affects the driving capabilities of the car, said the expert “Behind the wheel” Alexei Revin.
He calculated how much power the air conditioning system takes from the engine.
The air conditioning compressor at 3000–4000 rpm of the crankshaft takes on 4–6 hp. power. For engines of small displacement and power – not at all small.

It should be noted that at the most “accelerating” crankshaft speeds (up to 4000 rpm), the engine does not have the full nameplate, but much less power. For example, a motor with a maximum power of about 100 hp. in the range of 3000–4000 rpm, it produces only 40–60 hp. The loss of one tenth of the power from them is quite noticeable.

Therefore, the expert advises: on cars with engines with a displacement of up to 1.2 liters (without turbocharging), it is better to turn off the air conditioner when overtaking and driving in the mountains. The motor will become faster, and the ride will be safer. As for more “displacement” engines or those equipped with a turbocharger, the included air conditioner does not have a noticeable effect on their operation.
