Wind Catcher is a true innovation in renewable energy production and a unique wind turbine project from Norwegian engineers.
Norwegian company Wind Catching Systems (WCS) will soon build a unique floating platform equipped with wind turbines, which will be equal in height to a 100-story skyscraper, writes Interesting Engineering. It will be able, as the developers promise, to generate five times more energy than the world’s largest autonomous wind turbines of competitors.
Wind Catcher consists of a tall frame, on which it is planned to install more than a hundred wind turbines. The whole frame will be located on a large floating platform, which will be moored to the seabed, as is done with platforms producing oil and gas.
The main feature of the project is that a huge number of generators will be equipped with small blades, which will allow the wind to spin them more efficiently and generate more energy. The company calculated that their unique development is five times more efficient than competing wind turbines and that only one such floating platform will be able to provide “green energy” to 80,000 homes annually.

The small size of the turbines is also advantageous because they are cheaper to manufacture and repair. For example, repairs can be handled by a team of specialists right on the platform, and the turbine will not need to be delivered to shore in the event of a breakdown, which significantly reduces maintenance costs. And yet, due to simplified repairs, the entire system has a service life of 50 years, instead of the standard 30 for conventional wind towers and generators.
Unfortunately, nothing is known about the timing of the implementation of the project, but experts note that such an approach to wind generation deserves some interest for study and, perhaps, competing companies will also create something similar.
Earlier, Focus wrote that the world’s most powerful wind turbine in China will provide electricity to 20,000 homes.
