Budapest is interested in the fact that the trip does not carry an exclusively “demonstrative character”, but helps to resolve a number of disagreements between the countries that have arisen in recent years.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is ready to make an official visit to Kyiv, but the Ukrainian language law is one of the main obstacles. This was stated by the head of the prime minister’s office, Gergely Guyash.
According to him, the visit to Ukraine will take place only after the resolution of controversial bilateral issues, among them teaching the Hungarian language in schools in Transcarpathia.
“There are a number of issues with Kiev, which have not unreasonably aggravated relations between the two countries in recent years. If there are any of them that can be resolved, this (visit, -ed.) would make sense,” Guyash said at a press conference .
At the moment, the Hungarian government is interested in the fact that the visit of Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Kyiv would not only be “demonstrative”, but also help to solve the existing problems between the two states.
Gergely Huyash noted that the Ukrainian government needs to enable ethnic Hungarians to continue to study at school in their native language, but the law prevents this.
“The Ukrainian language law is contrary to all the principles of the European Union, and this in itself is an obstacle to the visit. The meeting would also be in the interests of Ukraine, since we have been blocking their dialogue with NATO for quite some time, because they trample on human rights and the right to a free language “, – said the head of the prime minister’s office.
The position of Hungary in the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine: what is known
Prime Minister Viktor Orban is in favor of holding peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, as this confrontation brings losses to all parties. He wrote about this on his page on the social network Twitter on February 24, and the post is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the full-scale invasion.
The head of the Hungarian government believes that the Russian Federation will not be able to win on the battlefield, but in no case should it be driven into a corner because of its nuclear potential.
In addition, Viktor Orban opposes Ukraine’s accession to NATO, because he considers it a provocative measure that could drag his country into a war with the Russian Federation, which he is trying hard to avoid. At the same time, he has a positive attitude towards the entry of Sweden and Finland into the Alliance.
