The weapons that the West provides today and the military is trained to use are aimed at liberating occupied territories, and not at containing enemy forces. However, the dates of the counteroffensive have not yet been announced.
Ukraine is preparing for a new counteroffensive. To this end, the partner countries are transferring powerful weapons, and the Ukrainian military is being trained abroad. This was reported on Wednesday, March 8, on the TSN website, citing a source in the government, whose name was not disclosed.
According to the interlocutor of the journalists, the weapons that the West is now transferring and the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trained to handle are aimed at attacking, and not at deterring enemy forces.
To liberate the occupied territories, Leopard tanks, which have already begun to arrive in Ukraine, will also be used.
“They will go in ready-made units. But it will decide [главнокомандующий ВСУ] Valery Zaluzhny,” the source notes.
As journalists write, Western countries provided Ukraine with tanks for a very specific purpose – to win the war.
“Western partners believed in us, and that’s why they give us weapons – not just tanks – for the counteroffensive,” the source notes.
And the visit of US President Joe Biden to Ukraine is another evidence that the West is counting on Kyiv’s victory, and is ready to invest its resources in this.
At the same time, the government is not ready to talk about the dates of the counteroffensive.
“When exactly it will take place is a question for the General Staff,” a source emphasizes to journalists.
Recall that on March 7, adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak said when the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be able to accumulate all the resources in order to launch their own large-scale counteroffensive. All Western weapons that Ukrainian troops need for offensive operations will arrive at the front within 1.5-2.5 months.
On February 19, Politico, citing its anonymous sources, reported that the US presidential administration demanded that Ukraine intensify its efforts at the front and launch a counterattack.
