Britain has a Urgent Operational Needs mechanism that allows it to bypass bureaucracy and procure guns as a priority for the army.
The UK must change its approach to arms procurement in order to restore stocks for the British military and the Ukrainian army. It is reported by Defense News.
Shadow Labor Party Defense Minister John Healy said the country’s defense industry should be transferred to ensure Defense Department procurement under Urgent Operational Need (UOR).
The publication notes that the UK has already had a similar experience with the supply of urgent operational needs during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. This allows funds to be quickly transferred to the front lines, eliminating bureaucracy and purchasing weapons without lengthy tenders. However, such a decision requires broad political support.
“We need to revive our approach to UOR, this can only be done as part of a broader industrial strategic approach to defense and, in my opinion, can only be achieved if it has cross-party support,” said consultant Wheeldon Strategic Advisory Howard Wheeldon.
The Labor Party criticizes the ruling Conservative Party, in particular, the Ministry of Defense procurement system. It is argued that the army does not have the funds to fulfill its obligations to NATO, the country is slowly resupplying, and many supply chains need to be rebuilt. So Labor will publish a new Defense and Security Strategic Review if they win the election.
Recall, on March 6, the media reported that data on aerial reconnaissance for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was collected by intelligence from 5-6 countries, including the United States and Great Britain.
On February 23, the British Ministry of Defense announced that the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine would last at least another year.
