Prince Harry and Meghan have a love story like no other couple, but even they couldn’t avoid the awkward phase that often comes with dealing with cultural differences at the start of a relationship.
In a new interview, the Duke of Sussex revealed that when he and Meghan first met — Meghan, an American actress living in Canada, and Harry, then a senior member of the British royal family — their differences became clear.
The discrepancies between British and American terms, as he joked on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, “gave me and my wife a lot of trouble at the beginning of our relationship.” Although he didn’t elaborate on the “problems” caused by their cultural differences in the interview, Harry writes extensively on the subject in his memoir Spare.
In the book, he writes about the time Meghan met Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, and the royals were taken aback by Meghan’s casual but friendly nature.
He also wrote about the heated argument that erupted due to the fact that Kate was offended by the typical American term used by Meghan.

Harry also writes about a time he overreacted to what Meghan said and lashed out at her as a defense mechanism.
“Meg said something that I misunderstood. It was partly due to cultural differences, partly due to the language barrier, but I was also overly sensitive that night. I thought, ‘Why is she trying to attack me?’ I snapped at her, spoke to her sharply and cruelly. As the words left my lips, I felt like everything in the room stopped, “Harry shared.
He reveals that Megan left the room they were in and 15 minutes later he found her in the bedroom.
“She was calm, but said in a quiet, even tone that she would never tolerate being spoken to like that,” he writes.

This event led him to seek therapy, which he still attends today.
The family of four now lives in California, having left the United Kingdom in 2020 and relinquishing their royal roles next year.

Since then, the couple has been open about their strained relationship with members of Harry’s family, from interviews with Oprah Winfrey to the Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan.
As for the future of their family, Harry told Colbert that the rest of his life could be described as “freedom”, “happiness”, “clarity”, “space” and “love”.
