Analysts from ASPI came to the conclusion that China is stronger than the US and Europe combined not only in technology but also in science.
According to a report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), China is in a better position in terms of technology than Western countries, writes aljazeera.com.
The document states that of the 44 most important technologies, China overtook everyone, taking first place. The country managed to develop 37 technological directions out of 44. European countries and the United States are losing on points that relate to scientific discoveries and testing of new technologies. Analysts stress that China could become the world’s leading tech superpower. In this country, technologically advanced areas such as defense, space research, robotics, energy, environment, biotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), advanced materials, quantum computing are very advanced.
The ASPI report states that the key areas dominated by China are:
drones, machine learning, electric batteries, nuclear power, photovoltaics, quantum computers, critical mining.
According to ASPI, China’s dominance in some areas is so ingrained that the world’s top 10 research institutes are made up entirely of Chinese research institutes. By comparison, the United States leads in just 7 major technologies, including space launch systems and quantum computing. South Korea leads in the top 20 technologies, and Germany in 17.
Experts from ASPI said that China’s technological leadership should be a “wake-up call for democratic countries.”

“In the long term, China’s leading position in the field of scientific research can lead to the fact that this country will succeed not only in the current technological development in almost all sectors, but also in the development of future technologies,” ASPI said in a comment. “Without appropriate control, this state, conducting its research in an opaque manner, hiding the results of its activities from civil society and the media, strengthening the military-industrial complex, will be able to dictate the rules for the development of technologies and strengthen its influence in the world.”
The analytical center made 23 recommendations to Western countries, their partners and allies. It is proposed to create sovereign wealth funds to finance research and development, to simplify the process of obtaining visas for scientists and IT specialists, to attract grants, to cooperate more actively among themselves, creating new public-private partnerships.
“The United States and China are engaged in a fierce competition for power and influence, which has pushed them to decouple their economies. The administration of US President Joe Biden has introduced a series of export controls and tax incentives aimed at slowing down the Chinese technology industry and restoring domestic production.
On Thursday, the US Department of Commerce added divisions of Chinese genetics company BGI and cloud computing firm Inspur to its blacklist for supporting the military-industrial complex and facilitating government oversight.
