According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the West allegedly does not want to take into account Russia’s concerns about its own security.
The Russian Federation does not intend to resume participation in the treaty on the reduction of strategic offensive arms until Western countries change their approach to the concerns of the Russian Federation regarding their own security. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.
“Of course, the conditions must somehow change, the conceptual approach of the countries of the collective West, led by the United States, must change in their understanding of our country’s concern for our own security, in understanding the thesis of its indivisibility,” Peskov said.
The Kremlin speaker mentioned that the NATO countries and the United States condemned Vladimir Putin’s decision to suspend Russia’s participation in the nuclear agreement. According to Peskov, the Russian president was right when he said that Western countries supposedly “ostentatiously” do not want to hear from the Russian Federation.
Dmitry Peskov also pointed out that Russia’s vision of this situation largely coincides with the Chinese “peace plan” to end the war in Ukraine.
“This is a very important ideological point in the Chinese plan, which, of course, corresponds to our approach,” Peskov said.
Recall that on February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his message to the Federal Assembly, announced that the Russian Federation was suspending participation in the treaty with the United States on strategic offensive arms.
Later, the Russian Foreign Ministry clarified that Moscow would continue to comply with the quantitative restrictions specified in the agreement and notify the United States of the launches of ICBMs and SLBMs. The department stressed that Putin’s decision to suspend strategic offensive arms could be reversible.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called the Russian President’s statement about the suspension of participation in START “deeply unsuccessful and irresponsible.”
The European Union called on Moscow to fulfill its obligations under the nuclear agreement and facilitate the conduct of relevant inspections on Russian territory.
