“Lightweight” rules have been in force in Russia since the summer of 2022.
Sanctions made it difficult for Russian car factories to work. Therefore, at the end of April 2022, amendments were adopted to the technical regulation “On the safety of wheeled vehicles”.
Now each member state of the EAEU (Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan) has the right to set the requirements for the cars it produces.
The operation of such machines on the territory of another state of the EAEU is possible only if there is a bilateral agreement.
The rules allow the production in the territory of the Russian Federation of cars with engines of an environmental class below Euro-5, cars without ABS (anti-lock braking system), without ESP (exchange stability system), and the ERA-GLONASS system may not have an automatic operation function.
In Russia, from cars in anti-crisis versions at AVTOVAZ, Granta, Niva Legend and Travel are produced. UAZ assembles a simplified version of the Hunter model. It can be purchased with both Euro-0 and Euro-5 engines. With a Euro-2 engine, UAZ Patriot and Pickup with a manual transmission are produced. At the same time, these cars are also produced with the Euro-5 eco-standard.
By the beginning of 2024, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant will return ABS and ESP, as well as airbags, to cars.
The validity of the document authorizing the production of simplified cars has been extended until June 1, 2023.
