After the invasion, the Ukrainian military received a trophy card of the Pskov paratroopers with the issue date of February 20. These are issued the day before the onset.
Ukraine was ready for a full-scale Russian invasion, which began on February 24, 2022. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexei Danilov spoke about the measures taken during the Radio Liberty marathon.
He recalled that the war began back in 2014, when Russia occupied Crimea, but then the invaders did not receive a worthy rebuff. Since 2020, Ukrainian intelligence agencies have been actively hunting down Russian agents and fighting propaganda media, and shortly before a full-scale invasion, a state of emergency was introduced in Ukraine.
“The first bells began on October 30, 2021,” said Alexey Danilov. “We were preparing the country for war. We thought we had done a great job to make our society ready for war. It was united.”
The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council added that the leadership of Ukraine considered several scenarios for the start of the war. Already after the invasion, the Ukrainian military received a map of one of the units of the Pskov paratroopers, which indicated the routes of advance and the date of issue – February 20. As Aleksey Danilov explained, such cards are issued to the military the day before the start of hostilities.
“It was crossed out, and then there was a second date: February 22,” he said.
