The traffic jams have made a comeback in this comeback. To the reduction of teleworking is of course added the traditional return to school. And trips between homes and schools put a lot of people on the roads: taking into account students, teachers, staff, they represent more than 26 million trips every day.
Obviously, when we think of trips to school, we think of school buses. And they are indeed very popular, accounting for 18% of trips. In addition, 15% of journeys with the buses of the public transport networks.
However, the private car remains a preferred mode of transport for taking children to school. This is what emerges from a survey carried out by the Eco CO2 company, the results of which were communicated to us in preview. 31% of parents surveyed use their car. In these, while 17% take a detour on their trip to work, 26% use their car only to go to school.
Good point for Eco CO2, whose mission is to make citizens aware of a change in behavior in terms of ecological transition, the car is on a par with zero emission modes of travel. 28% of trips are made on foot and 2% by bicycle. Good scores which can be explained by the fact that 30% of students live less than 2 km from their school.
Moreover, for these, 65% of parents are ready to favor active mobility (walking, cycling), an opinion motivated by health reasons (47%) and by ecological reasons (45%). However, the first criterion in travel remains safety. 59% of parents cite their supposed dangerousness as the main obstacle to the use of active mobility, which penalizes cycling in particular and still favors the automobile.
This had also been reinforced by the health context and the fear of contamination. But the development of vaccination allows parents to once again consider public transport. On the other hand, they are not very enthusiastic about carpooling, which represents only 1% of trips.
