If this curious BMW M8 sounds familiar to you, we’ve seen it before. Remember, that was in 2018, and she had the exact same license plate on her. In mid-May, it appeared on the Nürburgring with a slightly less aggressive look than it does now, and at the time we thought it was the M8 CSL.
BMW has since confirmed to Motor1.com that it is not the CSL and that it has no plans to build a hardcore version of the M8.
What is it then? BMW says it’s a vehicle used to test new accessories and racing parts. The latest iteration of this M8 still has ventilated quarter lights and a large spoiler, not to mention the red-tinted grille. However, it now sports red LED daytime running lights in the headlights that look like every evil robot you’ve seen in the movies. There is also a new vented hood, and it seems these are the only changes for this version of the “2108”.

Of course, BMW could do like Voltswagen by injecting some misinformation into the situation. Our sources are not entirely convinced by BMW’s statement, and there is a notable anniversary that BMW will be celebrating next year. BMW M division to celebrate 50 years in 2022, and a special edition of the M8 could help make this party unforgettable.
So that’s not to say that we won’t see something new for the 8 Series in the near future, especially with the 50th anniversary of the M Division. The red lights up front are unlikely to be kept for production, but that openwork hood could hide engine upgrades for a bit more oomph on the straights. Either way, we’ll be keeping an eye on BMW’s intentions regarding the M8.
