THE hybrid technology is the intermediate step between purely thermal powertrains and electrical. At a time when many car manufacturers are concentrating increasingly in electrificationthere are some who continue to invest with similar “zeal” in hybrids.
One of them is Suzukiwhich prepares a brand new hybrid powertrain with which it will supply a series of models, among which the Swift. This supports published by Autocar India and gives the first relevant information.
According to the report, Maruti Suzukithe Japanese subsidiary in India, has started its development hybrid system in housewithout taking advantage of the collaboration it has with Toyota. Her goal lower cost of the engine set, which will not “shoot up” the price of the models in which it will be installed.
Its basis will be the new thermal 3-cylinder 1.2 L gasoline engine with the code name «Z12E»which yields 83 PS and 112 Nm. This is the motor that has been installed in the 4th generation of Swift, which was introduced at the end of 2023 and already has 12V SHVS mild hybrid system.
In the existing 4th generation, the heat engine drives the car, enhanced during the acceleration process by SHVS. However, according to the Indians, in the new hybrid system being developed by Maruti Suzuki, the petrol engine will act as a range extendercharging the energy capacity battery 1,5-2 kWh or directly transmitting, through a converter, the electrical energy to electric motor, who will exclusively take over the movement of the car.
If this reminds you of anything, it is essentially a design philosophy equivalent to Nissan e-Power system. Thus, the movement will have the characteristics of a purely electric carwith the petrol engine operating mostly in its optimum rev range, for the benefit of performance and consumption.
Apart from the specific advantages, the report states that in this way it will cost less the construction of the new hybrid system, as it will be simpler its design. The Indians point out that Maruti Suzuki is expected to is launching the all-new Swift Hybrid in 2027 and remains to be proven if they are right and whether the particular version it will also come to Europe.
