According to Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cesary Tomczyk, the decision to dissolve the commission “will stop the expenditure of hundreds of millions of zlotys on activities that have nothing to do with explaining the causes of the disaster, but have a lot to do with politics.”
The Polish Ministry of National Defense is completing the work of the Smolensk subcommittee to investigate the crash of the government Tu-154 in 2010. The defense department announced this on its official website on December 15.
In an interview with TVN24, a deputy from the Civic Platform, former chairman of the Air Accident Investigation Committee, Maciej Laszek, and the new head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, stressed that the authorities would abandon versions of an internal explosion on board the plane, which killed the country’s President Lech Kaczyński and many high-ranking officials.
In addition, documents have already been signed on the dissolution of the commission that was investigating the tragedy. Moreover, a special group will now study every aspect of the activities of the subcommittee, which was headed by former Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz.

Smolensk disaster: They believe that they can shoot down a plane and think that everything is fine – Kaczynski
“I believe that today the Smolensk myth will end. We have a lot of work to do, and it is also important to explain to the people who believed the story of Antoni Macierewicz and the deputies of the Law and Justice party about the alleged attack… At least 31 million zlotys were spent, the second Tu- 154,” emphasized Maciej Laszek.
He was supported by Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk, who said that the decision to dissolve the commission “will stop the expenditure of hundreds of millions of zlotys on activities that have nothing to do with explaining the causes of the disaster, but have a lot to do with politics.”
The decisions of the new leadership of the Ministry of National Defense are also, as Civic Platform MP Krzysztof Breiza explains, the beginning of bringing Antoni Macierewicz to justice for the waste of public money.
“This is also the end of the privileges to which the former head of the Ministry of Defense (Antoniy Macierevic – Ed.) had access for almost eight years. By the end of the day on December 18, the commission must return all the tools it used and from this moment, that is, from the moment the decision is made, it no longer has the right to take any further action,” Tomczyk said on Friday, December 15.

The Ministry of National Defense also announced the creation of a group of experts who will monitor the activities of the subcommittee step by step.
“We will do everything to ensure that all cases related to the Smolensk commission of Antoni Macierewicz are solved as quickly as possible. What will definitely come to light are the facts about how the experiments were carried out, interpreted and distorted so that the results correspond to the preconceived thesis that that the attack took place in Smolensk,” emphasized Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Marcin Kierwiński.
Smolensk disaster – what happened
The Tu-154 plane, carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski and other high-ranking Polish officials, crashed on April 10, 2010 near Smolensk.
In 2015, the Law and Justice party, led by the brother of the deceased president Jaroslaw Kaczynski, came to power in Poland and created a new commission to investigate the causes of the disaster. She said the plane crashed due to explosions caused by “an act of unlawful interference,” and not the result of a disaster during an attempt to land in difficult weather conditions, which air traffic controllers had warned about. The disaster killed all 96 people on board.
