According to journalists, prison guards in the city of Abbotsford (British Columbia, Canada) found a pigeon that delivered illicit substances to prisoners. The police are still investigating.
A number of pigeons have been found in Canadian prisons delivering drugs to the penitentiary. Attached to the birds were tiny “backpacks” filled with crystal methamphetamine. This is reported by the Daily Star.
On February 27, 2023, officers at Abbotsford Prison (British Columbia, Canada) discovered the last drug-carrying pigeon. The bird was carrying a makeshift backpack that turned out to be made from a prisoner’s uniform.
This time the pigeon was found without the parcel itself. But last December, a previous “courier” was caught with a package full of crystal methamphetamine. This is the second time in three months.
Police are still investigating how the inmates were able to arrange for a banned substance to be delivered to the facility using birds as messengers. However, David Kaplan of the North Road Racing Pigeon Society at Langley has one theory.
“The prisoners had to provide the birds with food and water either from the cell window or from the garden shed they visited every day,” he told the Vancouver Sun.

However, Andy Hansen, exhibition director for the Vancouver Poultry and Pigeon Association, disagreed and came up with a different idea. He believes that, most likely, the parcel was planted. This method of drug delivery has been practiced for a long time.
“Someone must have tied the drugs to the pigeon and thrown it over the prison fence in such a way that the bird couldn’t fly away,” Hansen said.
Earlier, Focus wrote that in China, rodents help police catch drug dealers. A squad of six Eurasian red squirrels are trained to sniff out drugs where dogs can’t get.
It was also reported that cocaine was found in the blood of an African serval found in Ohio. The animal welfare organization received a report that an exotic cat was stuck in a tree, but the most surprising result in this story was the result of a drug test.
