The number of families in Russia owning one or more personal cars is 63%, according to a survey by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM).
Over the past 15 years, the level of motorization has increased:
Families with a car increased by 23 percentage points (40% in 2008) Families owning one car increased by 9 percentage points (46% in 2023 vs. 37% in 2008). )families with two or more cars increased by 14 percentage points (17% against 3% in 2008).

Over the past 15 years, Russians have begun to actively change to foreign cars. In 2023, the number of foreign cars in the personal use of Russians increased to 72%, which is 36 p.p. more compared to 36% in 2008.
At the same time, the share of families that own domestically produced cars decreased from 64% in 2008 to 37% in 2023.
In 2023, 25% of Russians announced their intention to purchase a car, which is 11 p.p. more than in 2008. Moreover, the majority of respondents are going to buy a used rather than a new car (57% and 37%, respectively).
When asked why they need a vehicle, 32% answered “for their needs”, and 23% said that a car is a means of transportation for them.
VTsIOM conducted a survey on February 18, 2023, 1.6 thousand Russians over the age of 18 took part in it.
