White House spokesman Jake Sullivan said dialogue between Xi Jinping and Zelensky would help keep China from bailing out Russia.
US officials called on Chinese President Xi Jinping to arrange talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. About it declared National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
According to the American official, Washington is counting on the fact that this conversation will actually happen, as Beijing needs to hear the Ukrainian point of view on the war with Russia.
“We called on President Xi to contact President Zelensky because we believe that China and President Xi himself should hear directly from the Ukrainian, and not just the Russian, point of view on this issue,” Sullivan said.
He also noted that US officials have made requests to Beijing in private and public formats. At the same time, the Americans contacted Kiev about this on Monday, March 13, but there is still no official confirmation that the conversation between Zelensky and Xi Jinping will take place by telephone or video format.
Sullivan said Zelenskiy’s conversation with Xi Jinping would help correct China’s perception of the war. It could also deter China from helping Russia.
Recall that the journalists of The Wall Street Journal have already reported that Xi Jinping plans to hold the first virtual meeting since the beginning of a full-scale war with the Russian Federation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. However, the head of the PRC has his own interest. Thus, through negotiations with Putin and Zelensky, he expects to play a more active role in resolving the military conflict in Ukraine.
Also back in February, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that China maintains a dialogue with all sides of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
