The country’s opposition sees the foreign policy committee’s excuses as “sluggish” and insists on tightening sanctions against the Kremlin.
Slovenia refused to recognize the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism. This is reported by the Euractiv portal.
On Thursday, March 9, the Foreign Policy Committee of the Slovenian Parliament rejected the proposal of the opposition Democratic Party, which called for the recognition of the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism.
The committee previously supported the coalition’s conclusions to condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine and urged the government to regularly provide assistance to official Kyiv. In addition, the committee advocated “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.” This time they did not support the proposal of the Democratic Party.
“We will demonstrate our support for the Ukrainian people, who are showing incredible courage in defending their homeland and fighting for the universal values of freedom and democracy, and at the same time condemn the Russian invasion,” said the Democrats who made the proposal.
At the same time, in the ruling coalition, even before the vote, this proposal was opposed, and Slovenian Foreign Minister Tania Fayon argues that any such initiative would be tantamount to “punishing the entire Russian people.”
This was followed by explanations from the country’s Foreign Ministry. According to them, neither in European nor in Slovenian legislation there are categories or a list that supports the terrorism of countries. To date, only seven EU countries and the US have adopted such resolutions.
The Slovenian opposition did not like this and they considered the Foreign Ministry’s excuses “sluggish” and called for increased sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Recall that on February 16, the Slovak Parliament recognized Russia as a sponsor of terrorism. The deputies, as stated in the text of the resolution, also support the creation of a special tribunal that will investigate war crimes committed by the RF Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine.
On December 15 last year, the Polish Sejm recognized Russia as a state that sponsors terrorism. The final text of the resolution states that the Russian Federation systematically violates human rights and international law, carries out attacks on the territories of other countries, and also commits war crimes and genocide.
