A military tactical genius is not required in order to ditch the manpower and equipment in the boiler. We know this from Soviet times: Stalin’s Order No. 227 “Not one step back!” and detachments of the NKVD behind the backs of the Red Army. And why “no step”? What is the meaning of this self-sacrifice?
Such questions are categorically forbidden to slavishly obedient mobilized from the under-empire, they are driven to our positions, like a flock to a slaughterhouse. And Ukrainian soldiers act consciously, they must know their maneuver and combat mission. And they should not die senselessly and stupidly. And the Ukrainian society will not agree with such losses.
Therefore, when the offensive potential of the under-empire was nullified in the Bakhmut area and time was gained for the preparation of reserves, the heroism of its defenders was justified. But this task has already been accomplished, our defensive positions have been destroyed for the most part, and it is perfectly expedient to retreat across the Bakhmutka River to a new line, conserving forces for further hostilities.
The abandonment of Bakhmut after almost a year of his defense will not affect the course of the military campaign. All this nonsense that the seventy-thousand-strong regional center is, as it were, the Stalingrad of this war, rolls only for illiterate Russians. During World War II, the capture of Stalingrad provided the German fascists with access to the oil fields of Azerbaijan and the cutting of the Volga, one of the main transport arteries of the USSR.
And Bakhmut does not cover anything. Its defense, together with the defense of Soledar, Vugledar and other fortresses, made it possible to stop the offensive attempts of the under-empire and neutralize it, perhaps now the most combat-ready unit – PMC “Wagner”.
In Bakhmut, there were arms depots in the salt mines. But it was Soviet-era small arms. Everything that is functional has long since been taken out. On the territory of one of the Bakhmut industrial enterprises there were warehouses of modern ammunition. But, I believe, they are already exhausted in battles.
If Bakhmut is left, Ukraine will not be left without salt. How it was not left without gasoline and diesel with the outbreak of hostilities, and how it was not left without light and heat after attacks on critical infrastructure. Moreover, the production of salt there was stopped six months ago.
I personally don’t see the point anymore in making extra efforts to defend Bakhmut. At the same time, if our military command (namely, military, not political!) Has considerations and opportunities for continuing defense while minimizing losses, then, of course, it knows better.
By the way, there have already been considerations that the strange partisanship in the Bryansk region arose precisely in order to divert attention from a potential retreat from Bakhmut. I don’t think so. Because the Armed Forces of Ukraine withdrew without any information fog, for example, from Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, and this did not cause any shocks to the indignant public. Because we have confidence in the professionalism of the military, who do what they must.
War is not a continuous victorious march of columns under unfurled banners. The main thing we expect is a prepared offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the spring and summer. And battles of tactical significance, for all their intensity, are only an episode of a large-scale military campaign. As they say, chickens are counted in the fall. So it will be. This is our Ukrainian way. Way to victory.
