The head of diplomacy, Melanie Joly, noted that everything that happens on the battlefield will subsequently affect the negotiating table, so helping Ukraine will help put it in a stronger position.
The People’s Republic of China can influence Russia, demanding the withdrawal of the occupying troops from the territory of Ukraine. This was stated by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly on February 26 in an interview with CBC.
“We are all for talking about peace, but if China really wants peace, it should tell Russia to get out of Ukraine,” Joly said.
According to the diplomat, Canada is still ready to help Ukraine repel Russian aggression.
“Everything that happens on the battlefield will subsequently affect the negotiating table. And the more we can help Ukraine defend itself, the more we can put Ukraine in a strong position when it comes to peace negotiations,” concluded Joly.
Recall that on February 24, on the anniversary of a full-scale war, the Chinese Foreign Ministry published its “peace plan”, consisting of 12 points. The first point is “respect for the sovereignty of all countries.” Among other things, Chinese diplomats are calling on the world to abandon the Cold War mentality, as well as to resume peace negotiations.
On the same day, February 24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that China’s “peace plan” cannot be regarded as a document that would help stop the Russian-Ukrainian war in practice.
On March 1, the same theses were confirmed by the chairman of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping, stating that Beijing’s position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine was “clear and consistent.”
