As a result of the collision, several cars derailed, and three started to catch fire. A teenager who survived the accident told the media that shortly before the collision, he felt strong braking and saw sparks.
About 350 people were on the passenger train.
According to railway operator Hellenic Train, the passenger train was heading from Athens to Thessaloniki. Approximately 350 people were inside at the time of the accident.
