Renault manufactures cars for everyone, but the diamond brand has been cultivating a certain art of more or less sassy sports cars for many decades. If the current range of the French manufacturer unfortunately only includes the aging – but still very effective – Mégane RS for lovers of cars to drive, Renault has dared to sell in the past machines as crazy as the Clio V6 (2000-2005 ) or more recently, the extremist Trophy R versions of the Mégane. But in this long history of the most cheeky Renaults, the 5 Turbo marketed between 1980 and 1985 holds quite a bit of it. Before leaving Alpine to take over the sports scene for good and as a final tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of the Renault 5, the brand is lifting the veil this morning on the R5 Turbo 3E.
Do not see any connection with the future Renault 5 electric series, expected for next year: this electric R5 has absolutely nothing compatible with the world of current city cars. Designed on the basis of a special tubular chassis, it has a body in the shape of a “restomod” of the R5 Turbo 2. It measures just over four meters long but above all 2.02 meters wide because of its wings. enlarged rears, roughly the figure of a Lamborghini Aventador. The chassis weighs 980 kg to which must be added the 520 kg of the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 42 kWh, installed at floor level at the rear. The latter powers two electric motors, each driving one wheel of the rear axle, developing a total power of 380 horsepower for 700 Nm of torque. Are you afraid for motor skills? Don’t worry, this little electric monster was specially designed to slide. Able to shoot down the 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds, it has a Drift mode and can steer its wheels at more than 50 degrees of angle like the specially prepared machines that we see in specialized competitions.
The official press release includes a long passage devoted to the design of the outfits of the driver and a model who will be dressed to parade alongside the R5 Turbo 3E at the Chantilly Concours d’Elegance this Sunday, September 25, but also to the NFT collection. that Renault will offer to buy online. Renault tells us about “Web3”, blockchains and an adaptation to the “codes of its time”.
