More than the boss of a brand that has become legendary, Enzo Ferrari was an extremely strong personality, gifted with an absolutely remarkable sense of formula and renowned for his frankness. ” I never lie. Liars lead extremely complex lives, and I would be afraid of being unmasked, ”he said one day.
This man who considered road cars as a necessary evil, a way of earning money to finance the activity in competition, will nevertheless have succeeded in producing models appearing in the pantheon of the automobile, starting with the 250 GTOs.
“The best Ferrari is the one we haven’t produced yet: it’s the next one. » This remark was equally valid for the road models as well as those of competition, on the subject of which he brought this precision: « the most beautiful car is the one which wins », he summed up in a pithy tone.
At the start of summer, a few days before the 34th anniversary of his death on August 14, 1988, Apple TV+ announced that it was preparing a series devoted to the Commendatore.
The good news is that it will be written by screenwriter and director Steven Knight, to whom we owe the excellent Peaky Blinders series. He worked from the Ferrari Rex biography signed by Luca Dal Monte, who will ensure that the information told by the series is respected.
This will focus on a period of 5 years, between 1956 – the year of the death of his eldest son Dino and the departure of Juan Manuel Fangio for Maserati, which he considered a betrayal – and 1961, the year of the first coronation of the Scuderia in the Formula 1 world championship. 5 years to start from scratch (or almost), and 5 years to forge its legend.
The series will be directed by Stefano Sollima: “As an Italian, I feel honored to be able to tell this story of Enzo Ferrari, a shining example of Italian excellence. Through his relationship with Ferrari Spring Team, the five drivers “adopted” by Enzo into his Scuderia after the loss of his eldest son, we will explore the unique qualities, great genius and dark obsession that made this man a legend.”
The series is currently in pre-production in Rome, and is expected to air sometime in 2023.
Also remember that the great filmmaker Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans, etc.) is preparing a cinematographic biopic dedicated to Enzo Ferrari, with Adam Driver in the title role, while his wife Laura will be played by Penelope Cruz. Filming begins this summer.
