Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid: a 2-seater utility version for the pros

The new Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid SUV is available in a version intended for professionals: it has 2 seats, with generous rear cargo space.

Between 2020 and 2021, sales to professionals have almost doubled (+ 92%) for Suzuki France: it is a strategic channel, which represents almost a fifth of the firm’s sales in France. To diversify its offer, Suzuki now offers a new Two-seat utility S-Crossdesigned to meet the needs of professionals.

The transformation of the SUV into a utility vehicle was carried out by Jocquin, a company based in the Somme and a partner of Suzuki France. The rear bench seat and the boot floor have been removed and replaced by a reinforced floorwhich brings the loading length to 1.44 meters, all over a width of 1.25 meters.

Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid VU: up to 1,340 liters of useful volume

Thus transformed, the Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid “VU” offers a useful volume of 1,340 dm³ (500 dm³ under tablet). A metal load stopper can be painted or covered with carpet, and helps prevent the load from sliding forward. It is also possible to opt for a separation grid between the cabin and the loading space, or even an optional luggage cover shelf.

Under the hood, we find the hybrid engine of the “VP” version: a 1.4 liter Boosterjet Hybrid developing the power of 129 horsepower. A self-charging hybrid engine will also be offered at the start of the 2022 school year.

Conversion to a SUV can be done on all S-Cross models, by all authorized Suzuki dealers. VU Kit prices start from €625 excluding tax, excluding poses. As an option, count 180 € HT for the luggage cover, or 465 € for the load stop grid.

Presented at the start of the year at Caradisiac, the new generation of the Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid now adapts to the needs of professionals with a 2-seater utility version that offers a large loading volume.

The transformation of Suzuki’s family SUV into a utility vehicle was designed in collaboration with the Jocquin company, based in the Somme, a long-standing partner of Suzuki France. The rear bench seat and boot floor have thus been replaced by a new reinforced floor which takes up all the space freed up, offering a loading length of 1.44 m and a maximum width of 1.25 m. The usable volume thus reaches 1,340 dm3. A metal load stopper, painted or covered with a choice of carpet, protects the front passengers from any slipping of the load.

Note that a separation grille and a luggage cover shelf are also available as options. The transformation into a utility vehicle can be carried out on all versions, 2 and 4 wheel drive. Any Suzuki dealer can perform the conversion. The prices excluding installation are as follows: UV kit only: €625, UV kit and luggage cover: €805, UV kit and load stop grille: €1,090, UV kit with luggage cover and grille: €1,340.

Beyond these specific fittings, the utility Suzuki S-Cross is strictly identical to the standard version, and offered with the same three trim levels. It thus benefits from the Suzuki 1.4 l hybrid engine. BOOSTERJET HYBRID of 129 horsepower, a proposal which will be supplemented with the new self-recharging hybrid engine at the start of the next school year.

Ford E-Transit Custom (2023). Utility goes electric

Ford recently announced seven new electric vehicles for Europe by the end of 2024 and is unveiling one of them today: the E-Transit Custom. As the name suggests, this is the utility New generation Transit Custom in its “zero emission” versiona first for the van whose current iteration is already offered in micro-hybrid and rechargeable hybrid.

Electric vans from Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Fiat will soon have a much more modern competitor.

Change of look for the Transit Custom

The new Transit Custom adopts a more muscular appearance than its predecessor, a less vertical front bonnet and clearly refined front lights, all underlined by an imposing octagonal grille. The upper edge of it incorporates a light ring that links the optical units, as at Volkswagen, enough to remind that the two manufacturers are partners in the development of commercial vehicles, among others. The Ford E-Transit Custom will feature LED lights on all four corners. The utility should also be offered in thermal with different levels of hybridization. For the moment, the brand with the blue oval does not reveal any image of the interior.

Electric or not, the grille of the Transit Custom imposes.

The electric model will be equipped with full LED lighting.

Specifications that remain to be known

The exact dimensions of the Ford E-Transit Custom have not yet been communicated.

Ford does not say more about the powertrain of the E-Transit Custom than about its equipment. He just points out that the vehicle will have for him ” fast charging and full towing capacity »that it aims for a range of 380 km, and that it will be possible to power external devices from the van.

This somewhat incomplete communication is explained by the expected delay before the production of the van. This will only be assembled from the second half of 2023 at the Ford-Otosan plant in Kocaeli, Turkey. In particular, it will compete with electric vans of the same size from the Stellantis group.

The E-Transit Custom can be used as a generator to power tools.

Other electric utility vehicles and their “touring” variants have already been announced, in this case the future Transit Courier, Tourneo Custom and Tourneo Courier. On the passenger car side, we expect in particular two SUVs using the Volkswagen group’s modular MEB platform as well as an electric Puma promised for 2024.

Peugeot Partner Rapid (2023). An “old-fashioned” utility vehicle in Brazil

At the end of 2021, Fiat unveiled a restyled version of its small utility Fiorino in Brazil. For memory, the Fiat Fiorino is the van derived from the local Fiat Uno, it was introduced in South America in 2013. This 2022 version features a redesigned shield, modified optical units and a more sculpted bonnet. On board, the furniture has been modernised, derived from the Fiat Strada pick-up, while numerous additional storage spaces will make the daily life of Brazilian craftsmen easier.

Partner Rapid: an old-school utility

The heir to the 205 F?

Like the Fiat Fiorino (photo), the Peugeot Partner Rapid has a carrying capacity of 3.1 cubic meters for a load of 650 kg.

This utility, 4.38 m long for a height, in its rear part, of 1.90 m, is the equivalent, in more rustic, of the Peugeot Partner “just short” that we have in Europe. The Peugeot Partner Rapid with its city car silhouette is in a way the distant Latin American heir of the Peugeot 205 F (f meaning van). It offers a loading capacity of 650 kg, can tow a 400 kg trailer and its payload volume is 3.1 cubic meters.

The Peugeot 205 F was manufactured by coachbuilder Durisotti between 1993 and 1996 at just under 14,000 units. It is the ancestor of Partner.

The Peugeot Partner Rapid should arrive on the South American market during the month of May 2022. Its marketing in Europe is not on the program, with us Peugeot’s utility range begins with the “very short” Partner which has a similar format (4.40 m long) for a much better loading capacity (from 3. 3 to 3.8m³) .

Oatmeal Zuo Van (2022). Both utility and recreational vehicle

The Lyon branch of the Gruau group, which specializes in the transformation of vehicles, is presenting a new layout for vans called Zuo Van. Its concept is twofold because it is designed to meet both utilitarian and leisure use. With this proposal, Gruau intends to seduce professionals eyeing converted vans.

Large drawers for professionals

The centerpiece of the Zuo Van is the box installed just behind the second row of seats and which occupies all the remaining floor space up to the rear doors of the vehicle. Its dimensions make it possible in particular to place a pallet on it. This cabinet has three deep drawers : two are used to store equipment, while the third can be used as a work surface. The interior walls of the cabin, made of wood, can be equipped with storage. So much for the utility part.

Modular storage and sleeping

Obviously, said drawers are capable of accommodating all kinds of objects, in particular dedicated to leisure activities. The second-row seats can be removed to make way for a cargo space that can accommodate, for example, a bicycle. At the end of the box, interior side, a lift-up shelf allows the top of the cabinet to be transformed into a bed. The standard range does not include any sanitary or food equipment, but an electrical converter is offered as an option to supply various devices.

The upper right drawer can be used as a table.

Presented on a Peugeot Expert, the Zuo Van fittings can be adapted to all compact utility vehicles of L1 or L2 length. On the price side, count between €3,800 excluding VAT for the piece of furniture alone and €11,000 excluding VAT for a complete layout, knowing that many “à la carte” configurations are offered between the two.

Volkswagen: more than 350,000 utility vehicles delivered in 2021

The German manufacturer presented the sales figures for its utilities for the year 2021, with a return to the increase in its profits.

Volkswagen recorded no less than 359,500 commercial vehicle deliveries last year, compared to 371,000 in 2020. The German manufacturer is nevertheless satisfied with the sales performance, with a well-filled order book: “Our products are in high demand, which shows the strength of the brand and customer interest in the products we offer”says Carsten Intra, Chairman of the Management Board of Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge.

Despite the difficult context due to the health crisis, Volkswagen returned to profit in 2021, with an operating result of 73 million eurosup sharply by €527 million compared to the loss of €454 million recorded in 2020. The drop in R&D costs notably contributed to this result.

Volkswagen: a renewed range

The German firm will expand the offer of its utility vehicles with the new Multivan, Transporter T6.1, ID. Buzz, without forgetting the future Amarok, resulting from a cooperation with Ford. Recently unveiled, the new ID range. Buzz will consist of a minibus, as well as a van version called ID. Buzz Cargo.

Renault plans to deliver its first hydrogen utility vehicles in 2022

An attractive alternative to battery electric utilities

Compared to electric utilities, which are beginning to multiply in cities, hydrogen vehicles have the advantage of a short charging time and long autonomy, close to diesel, sought by logistics companies such as local authorities. But the production of carbon-free hydrogen as well as the distribution network remain to be developed.

30% of the European utility market

Renault is positioning itself against Stellantis, which delivered its first hydrogen-powered Peugeot and Opel utility vehicles at the end of 2021, but also against Hyundai or Toyota, which are betting on this energy. Hyvia currently employs 70 people, including 25 in Flins, mostly from other workshops on the site, and there is still plenty of room to increase production. “Everything will depend on the acceleration of the market”, underlined David Holderbach, the general manager of Hyvia. It is ultimately targeting 30% of the European hydrogen utility market, particularly in France, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Hyvia’s hydrogen investment projects (located in Flins, Villiers-Saint-Frédéric, Batilly, and Gretz-Armainvilliers) are among the 15 projects pre-notified by France to the European Commission to receive aid under the European PIIEC program (Joint European Important Project) on hydrogen.

Renault Kangoo Van (2022). Utility prices on the rise

In the Kangoo family, the MPV is not the only one to review its range in March. The Van variant, designed for professionals, has not been forgotten. With, featured, the arrival of the EDC dual-clutch gearbox on diesels, whereas it was reserved for the TCe 130 petrol until now. Available on the Blue dCi 95 and 115, this automatic transmission requires an additional cost of €1,700…and a little patience. For the time being, Renault announces that these versions are in the process of being approved, so that the order books are not yet open.

Up to €1,100 increase

Those in a hurry will therefore have an interest in favoring the manual transmission variants, which are more numerous and more affordable. But they will still have to revise the budget upwards, because the prices of the Kangoo Van increase on the 1^is mars 2022 :

+ €1,100 for the Blue dCi 75 and
+ €900 for other engines.

The offer thus now starts at €21,300 excluding tax in petrol with the TCe 100 and at €21,800 with the Blue dCi 75 diesel. The giant side opening on the right side “Open Sesame” still requires an extension of €1,000.

The smallest diesel engine, the Blue dCi 75, is the one with the biggest increase: + €1,100. Its price now starts at €21,800.

Previously reserved for the petrol TCe 130, the EDC dual-clutch gearbox is now available on the Blue dCi 95 and 115 diesels.

Unlike that of the model for paparticular, the range structure is unchanged here. The access version therefore remains called Grand Confort, and gains stabilization assistance in the event of side winds. On the other hand, it now favors black over chrome for various elements: front and rear protective skids, interior handles, gear lever base… The dashboard and upholstery are also converted to black, instead of light gray this times. The atmosphere is therefore dark. All Kangoo Vans, including the top of the range Extra, also lose their sun visor mirrors and the button to lock the vehicle on the door handle.

An autonomous driving pack at €2,400

For €2,400, the Autonomous Driving pack endows the Kangoo Van with numerous aids, allowing level 2 autonomous driving.

In return, Renault is introducing new packs. Especially the most expensive of them, the Autonomous Driving package. Reserved for the Extra versions with EDC gearbox and invoiced at €2,400 excluding taxes, it includes numerous electronic aids:

The Renault Kangoo Van voted utility 2022 at the L’argus Trophies

The 29^e ceremony Trophies of L’argus held on February 17, 2022 crowned the Renault Kangoo Van in the Utility category. Thierry Plantegenest, Renault World Sales Director, received the Trophy from Olivier Brabant, a valuation expert at The argument. During this ceremony hosted by Margot Lafitte, pilot and television presenter, all the winners of the 2022 Trophies were revealed.

For the Utility Vehicle Trophy 2022, twelve models were in competition and it is necessary to note the push of the 100% electric versions with five representatives at Citroën, Opel, Peugeot, Toyota and Volkswagen. The Kangoo Van is also framed on the podium by the ë-Berlingo and e-Partner after the vote of our specialized jury (see below) which establishes its ranking according to seven criteria: useful qualities, services, environmental qualities, safety , ergonomics & life on board, cost of ownership and crush. However, an eighth criterion has been created for electric vehicles, the crucial one of autonomy.

One of Kangoo’s innovations is its “Open Sesame” entry system.

The Renault Kangoo has dominated the van market since the first generation model. The new model was launched in the course of 2021. Its design is more rewarding and its new platform will allow it to be available in a 100% electric ZE version with more efficiency than before. On utility vehicles, safety is often optional

At the end of 2020, Euro NCAP was interested in the presence of safety equipment on utilities. The independent body then criticized the delay of the vans. Technologies that have become standard on cars were very often offered as an option on vans… or even completely unavailable.

Euro NCAP looked again at the subject to see if any progress had been made. As a reminder, the organization evaluates the presence of equipment, but also their efficiency, with an overall score in percentage, which gives access to medals.

Positive point: we can say that yes, there is better, at least on the availability of aid. With a logic: the notable progress relates to the vehicles which were restyled since the first evaluation. Thus, the Renault Trafic, which benefited from a major update in terms of aesthetics and staffing a few months ago, saw its score go from 11 to 45%. Whereas before it was “not recommended” by Euro NCAP, this time it obtains a silver medal.

The Master has also moved out of the “not recommended” zone thanks to an improvement in the monitoring of white lines. However, he keeps a small score of 29% (a bronze medal). Moreover, its cousin from Nissan, the Interstar, remains “not recommended” because it has no automatic emergency braking.

The large utilities of the ex-PSA are content with the bronze medal (Citroën Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, Opel Movano). While their Fiat cousin signs the most spectacular progression. Thanks to a big update in 2021, its score goes from 28 to 88%. It thus becomes the first utility vehicle with the “platinum” medal and the most recommended vehicle by Euro NCAP, whose aim is to encourage companies to choose the safest vehicles for their employees and other road users, to as much as these utilities are more and more present on our roads with the flight of the delivery of parcels.

The Ducato notably has emergency braking with detection of pedestrians and cyclists. Euro NCAP also highlights the effectiveness of this device. Its cousins should soon benefit from these improvements. Other good students include the Ford Transit and Transit Custom, the Volkswagen Transporter or the Mercedes Sprinter.

The negative point is that if the utilities are better equipped, you always have to go through the list of options. None of the vehicles tested by Euro NCAP has emergency braking and lane keeping assistance as standard from the start (however, the staffing may vary depending on the country). A delay in the face of cars which is explained by European regulations which remain more permissive. But that will change, with the implementation of new obligations in the coming months.
