The 2021 Munich Motor Show has already closed its doors. The mobility exhibition will only be accessible to the public for 4.5 days (opening at 2:00 p.m. on September 7). Nevertheless, the organizers are delighted to have welcomed around 400,000 participants.

Participants does not mean visitors …

To replace the Frankfurt Motor Show, the city of Munich and the organizers of the IAA 2021 had bet on the more global theme of mobility by adding to the world of cars that of bicycles. Enough to attract new visitors: 45% of them came to the show mainly attracted by the world of cycling *. The organizers, however, report participants and not visitors: this term thus includes people who have physically visited the various places (exhibition center, town center), but also those who have logged in to the online platform.

Numerous tests carried out

This fair has also innovated by offering exhibitors two different and remote locations to set up their stands: one at the exhibition center, the other in the city center of Munich. To join these two areas, physical visitors had access to a fleet of more than 250 electric vehicles. Thus, nearly 7,000 tests were carried out.

The dream builders were missing …

With barely 400,000 participants, the IAA 2021 shows a drop in attendance compared to the last edition which took place in 2019 in Frankfurt (560,000 visitors). However, this exposure had lasted 10 days, more than double that of this year. Furthermore, the absence of many car brands did not play in favor of attendance: Ferrari or Lamborghini always attract car fans, although they often have to stay away from models.

Citroen C5 X

The entire Stellantis group did not make the trip to Munich. There were, however, many new features for the public to discover, including the C5 X, which marks Citroën’s return to the family car market. To stand out, the C5 X dares a funny formula: a mix between sedan, station wagon and SUV! In a good Citroën, the car emphasizes comfort, with generous roominess and the suspension with progressive hydraulic stops. Available to order for a few days, with a price starting at € 32,900, the C5 X is offered in gasoline and plug-in hybrid. Start of deliveries in January 2022.

DS 4

It is the best DS weapon to go against the kings of German premium. For its new compact, the brand has put the small dishes in the big ones: neat finish (while an Audi A3 has lowered in level on this point), beautiful technological endowment (with for example a head-up display with augmented reality, a controlled suspension associated with a camera) and a wide choice of engines (gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid). And this DS 4, available with a Cross adventurer look, is even made in Germany, in an Opel factory! However, she did not want to make eye to the Germanic public.

Honda HR-V

From 2022, the entire European range of Honda will be electrified. As is already the case with the Jazz and the CR-V, the new HR-V will only be offered as a single hybrid. It receives a 1.5 petrol and two electric units, for a power of 131 hp. A unique choice that will not be crippling, you just have to look at the success of the Toyota C-HR to be convinced. The technique is not the only important evolution for the HR-V: the look is revised in depth, with a silhouette that tends towards the SUV coupe. On board too, that changes, the presentation winning in sobriety to be more chic. This hybrid HR-V will arrive on our roads in early 2022.

Lexus NX

This is the second generation for the compact SUV from Lexus. The model being a success (170,000 sales in Europe), the brand did not take any risk: it is evolution rather than revolution! We thus find a very angular style. On board, the presentation is modernized with the presence of a huge 14-inch screen. The biggest novelty is under the hood: this new NX is Lexus’ first plug-in hybrid, with a technical package of 309 hp. The electric autonomy is 63 km. The model still exists as a simple hybrid of 244 hp.

Maserati Grecale

After unveiling its new flagship, the MC20 supercar, Maserati must present a model that should boost its sales. Unsurprisingly, it’s an SUV. This is not new for the firm, which already offers the big Levante. The Grecale will be in the category below, and will thus come up against the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Promised for several years, we thought to see him at the start of the school year. But we will still have to wait (until November) to discover this cousin of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which could have the right to a 100% electric version.

Opel Astra

It is perhaps the biggest absent from the living room and even a mystery. Playing at home, Opel did not come to expose its big novelty of the end of the year, the new generation of Astra, yet a perfect illustration of the revival of the brand in the blitz under the leadership of PSA. The car owes a lot to the French group, since the base is that of the new 308. But it is well hidden. This Astra adopts the new aesthetic codes of Opel, for the exterior and interior. On board, the car takes a big leap forward with a digital presentation. The technical offer is modeled on that of the lioness, with in particular two rechargeable hybrids of 180 and 225 hp.

Peugeot 308

It is Peugeot’s anti Golf. But the Lion did not want to go and compete with the famous German on his land! The 308, however, has nothing to be ashamed of. On paper, it has everything it takes to compete with the Golf: original presentation (with the famous i-Cockpit), up-to-date equipment, new plug-in hybrid engines. Add to that a more sporty look, much less versatile than that of the Volkswagen. The 308 is the first model to feature Peugeot’s new logo, in the form of a coat of arms. Already unveiled in sedan and station wagon, soon in dealerships, it will be on trial from September 15 on Caradisiac.

Skoda Fabia

The programming of this show sometimes gives rise to misunderstanding. A good part of the VW group came, but not Skoda. Yet the firm is a heavyweight in the German market and had big novelties on the shelves. It could thus have shown the public the new generation of the Fabia, which will join the dealerships in October. This fourth Fabia finally adopts a modern base, that of the Polo, which allows it to make a leap in time in terms of equipment. Add to that a neat presentation, a nice roominess and the tips that we like about Skoda… and one wonders what is left in the Polo, if not a coat of arms.

Toyota bZ4X

Along with Stellantis, Toyota is the other major group absent from the Munich Motor Show. However, he had many novelties to exhibit. In very different registers, we could thus have discovered the GR 86 coupe, replacing the GT 86, as well as the bZ4X. Behind this somewhat barbaric name hides the first electric model designed by the brand on a dedicated basis. It is an SUV, similar in size to a RAV4. Once again, Toyota has not been sober in terms of looks. On board, the vehicle even dares to fly like an airplane. Expected in dealerships in 2022, the bZ4x has not yet unveiled its technical sheet.

Volvo Recharge Concept

If Polestar, the new electric brand from Volvo, exhibited well in Munich, the Swedish parent company did not come with its novelties, namely the C40 electric coupe SUV and the Recharge concept car. The latter was presented at a press conference in early summer, and was never shown to the public. It’s a shame all the same for a style study! The Recharge concept lays the foundations for the next generation of electric Volvo, starting with the next XC90, expected in 2022.

Sometimes driving can be the most stressful activity of the day. Anyone who is faced with city traffic or traffic jams on a daily basis knows this very well. And yet, in the future, the car may be our ally to fight stress.

Ford has unveiled a concept car that promises improve driver concentration and well-being. This prototype is based on a Ford Kuga and constitutes a real laboratory for experimenting with solutions that could also be found in future models of the range. The aim is to study the technologies and functions that could improve the well-being of passengers on a daily basis.

Concretely, Ford proposed several ideas. Among these is the “Unlock Purge” function, which can also be activated via an app, and which brings a breath of pure and fresh air into the passenger compartment, via the air conditioning, before the driver ‘enters the vehicle.

The specific air filter, on the other hand, removes dust, allergens and smog (a thick brownish mist, from a mixture of air pollutants, which limits visibility in the atmosphere), while ultraviolet light-emitting diodes block the reproduction of viruses and germs on all surfaces, including smartphones.

The driver’s seat, made with specific elements, is made of durable materials and natural colors. It also has four mechanisms to stimulate and provide feedback on the driver’s breathing and heart rate.

The Hi-Fi system also contributes to well-being on board, with a multi-level equalizer that varies according to the mood, while speakers are integrated into the headrests for immersion at the best level. There is also special playlists reproducing the sound of the sea or nature in order to reduce, as much as possible, the stress of traffic jams. During long stops, the Powernap function kicks in. You can recline the seat and listen to relaxing music to fall asleep more easily.

Finally, and surprisingly as it sounds in a vehicle, there is also room to do yoga. The car is equipped with an interactive guide that explains how to perform some small physical exercises or short meditation sessions to be performed when the car is stationary.

According to Ford, these measures can also improve empathy towards other road users, making journeys safer and more enjoyable for everyone. “Through this concept, we seek to create experiences that fuel greater awareness. Through unique features and integrated technologies, Ford is offering drivers and passengers new ways to be attentive when they are. in a vehicle “, specifies Mark Higbie, consultant for Ford. Paul Smith, famous English designer known for his stripes of bright colors imagined “his” Mini on the basis of the Cooper SE electric version, with the general theme “Simplicity, Transparency, Durability”. The stylist first had an example of the car completely dismantled and then retained the elements he considered “absolutely necessary”.

He therefore deliberately imagined a minimalist design, which gives a basic air to the car, rather known for its high-end customizations! It starts with a body that is left in the raw state, without coloring. There is just a thin clear layer that protects against corrosion! Paul Smith also left the grinding marks on the steel bodywork visible, a way of identifying the car as a functional object and a rugged companion. Which is no longer really the image of the Mini! Paul Smith called this “the perfect imperfection”.

Likewise, the side sills and wheel surrounds, typical of the modern Mini, have been kept, but have been 3D printed with recycled plastic with a raw appearance. Paul Smith made a point of leaving the fixing screws visible. The grille and the wheels have a coating that favors aero. These elements are also made from recycled material.

On board, the British went even further. He had many dressings removed. We can see the structure of the body, which has been painted blue. The dashboard has been thoroughly revised. Its upper part, which extends to the top of the doors, is made of recycled cork. Then there is a semi-transparent glass headband. The IAA Munich mobility fair was expected around the corner as much by journalists as by observers of the automotive industry. After two editions of the Geneva Motor Show (2020 and 2021) and a Paris Motor Show in 2020, canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Bavarian event marks a return to business in Europe. But is this new formula combining a classic paid exhibition in the halls of the Messe and ephemeral stands or corners, scattered around the center of the city, the panacea?

A living room in the city center, or not.

A trade fair that makes the city its own and which requires visitors to travel a lot to visit it as a whole is, on paper, the ideal champion of mobility. Be careful that, in practice, this “cantor” does not make us disillusioned …

From an economic point of view, the few builders who chose to participate had to multiply the costs by two in order to be present both in town and in the grounds of the Messe (exhibition center). And no way, with rare exceptions, to lean on a concession to limit the expenditure. Apart from Cupra who seized the opportunity to open his City Garage in Munich – as it has been able to do in other large European cities – the other brands are capitalizing more on sales areas that are more remote.

From a practical point of view, unless you have the gift of ubiquity, it is difficult to be in two places at the same time like Dacia present in lake mode, at the entrance of the show and, in ephemeral concession mode, downtown. On the positive side, this offers a double exposure to the Dacia Jogger. Because, to make matters worse, builders are not placed close to each other, it even takes more than a kilometer to reach Odeonplatz from Königsplatz. We will console ourselves by discovering the architectural beauty of the city center of the capital of Bavaria. From this point of view, the expanse between the different venues invested may be reminiscent of the Frankfurt trade fair fire.

Finally, it takes 30 minutes by metro or 40 minutes by shuttle, or even a little more depending on traffic conditions, to reach this exhibition in the city center and the exhibition center located to the east of the city. You will have to be a big fan of cars to make the trip or absolutely want to make your entry ticket profitable (20 €). Be careful, if the production models can be present in both places, the concepts will only be visible in one place …

Smaller stands

The classic part of the so-called “Summit” show is divided into 9 distinct halls but when we detail the purely automotive part, the count quickly drops to four. And even, there are often only one or two manufacturers per hall, surrounded by a multitude of equipment manufacturers. The latter are exhibited on stands of very respectable size, often larger than those of the manufacturers. Indeed, the surfaces here have nothing to do with those of Frankfurt. It was therefore necessary to make choices as at Renault, which significantly revised its layout between September 6 and 7. Even Mercedes had to bring in its many new products to the shoehorn.

As for the other pavilions (B4, B5 and B6), they are entirely devoted to cycles, another aspect of mobility. If bicycles are clearly in the spirit of the political times, they seem much less attractive to professionals: the aisles were, in fact, sparse, and the safety distances were easier to respect. Other areas of the exhibition center are also reserved for conferences in order to redefine the contours of the automobile.

La der d’Angela Merkel

The aborted heir to the 911 GT1

The Porsche 919 Hybrid is the LMP1 prototype with which Porsche won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in a row between 2015 and 2017. Riding on these successes, the Zuffenhausen firm had the idea of ​​marketing a version in very small numbers. “Client” of the 919. Although named 919 Street, the car was not intended to be approved for road use. Not designed for running either, it was designed for the practice of the circuit as an amateur. Compared to the racing car, the 919 Street displays different lights, especially at the rear where the light strip evokes the other models in the range. Its longitudinal fin is shorter, and it does without a transverse fin, which gives it a look that is both slender and compact.

An overly sharp supercar

The 919 Street differs from the 919 Hybrid by its looks, but very little by its technical characteristics. It was to receive the same engine as the LMP1, combining a 2.0 turbo V4 and an electric motor to send 900 hp to all four wheels. The endurance car’s carbon fiber monocoque chassis also had to be taken over. But this radicalism meant that a team of Porsche technicians would accompany each customer for each session on the circuit in order to manage this complex mechanism. Starting the car alone would have taken 45 minutes. It was this constraint that prompted Porsche to abandon the project. The parallel with the Mercedes-AMG One, whose V6 1.6 turbo plug-in hybrid of more than 1000 hp is taken from F1, is quickly made. Initially announced for 2019, the star hypercar continues to be postponed due to the difficulties of adapting its powertrain to road use appearing, in its case, in the specifications. A prototype close to the series is exhibited in Munich.

Continental presents a Volkswagen Combi T2 named AMBIENC3, modernized and fitted out for the era of autonomous vehicles, halfway between restomod and concept car. Its interior is designed for relaxation and work as much as for driving.

The Combi goes green

The first thing that we notice on board the concept is the warm and natural atmosphere provided by the colors and materials. Wood rubs shoulders with recycled fabrics in an ecological perspective. In addition, the smoothness of the surfaces and the lightness of the textiles also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the vehicle thanks to a contained weight. Nothing is said about the engine, but maintaining the gear lever suggests that the Combi has retained its original petrol mechanics.

A cabin dedicated to relaxation

As expected, Mercedes is developing an electric range in parallel with the thermal range.
