After the end of the war with Russia, about 15 million citizens of Ukraine will need psychological help. This was announced on Thursday, May 11, by the director of the Department of Medical Services of the Ministry of Health, Alexandra Mashkevich, on the air of the national telethon “United News”.

According to Mashkevich, after the war in Ukraine, a wide variety of categories of the population will need psychological assistance, such as veterans, military personnel and their families, children and adolescents, Ukrainians who have been in captivity, and others.

“According to our tentative estimates, about 15 million citizens will need psychological assistance and psychosocial support,” a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health said.

As an early tetrapod, Crassigyrinus was a huge aquatic predator that lived in the coal marshes of Scotland and parts of North America during the Lower and Middle Carboniferous, writes IFLScience.

Although closely related to some of the first species to make the transition from water to land, Crassigyrinus itself never landed on it.

For almost a century, scientists have been studying the remains of this aquatic animal. However, their progress was hampered by the fact that all known fossils were severely crushed due to being preserved in fine-grained rock. This led to the fact that many broken and deformed bones, with fragments lying randomly on top of each other, made it very difficult for researchers to restore their appearance.

But now, thanks to advances in computed tomography (CT) and 3D imaging, the team has been able to digitally reconstruct the skull of Crassigyrinus for the first time. Using pieces from four samples of all the skull bones, they were able to put the pieces together like a 3D puzzle.

Dr Laura Porro of University College London, lead author of the study, found that the animal had a skull similar to that of modern crocodiles, with large teeth and powerful jaws.

Thanks to them, they could devour everything that happened on the way. Combined with recent body studies, this suggests that the animal was rather splashy with short limbs, allowing it to hide below the surface of the water and grab prey with a powerful bite, similar to modern crocodiles.

There is also an amazing gap in the front of the skull, which may have given it other senses as well. One theory is that this gap may have contained a rostral organ that allowed Crassigyrinus to detect electric fields, or an early example of Jacobson’s organ that allowed him to distinguish between various chemicals. However, whatever was in this gap, it was not preserved and remains a mystery.

The study is dedicated to co-author Professor Jenny Kluck, a pioneering paleontologist who revolutionized our understanding of early tetrapod evolution and died in 2020. The new reconstructions are now being used to experiment with a series of biomechanical simulations to see what this terrifying predator was really capable of.

These regions of human DNA that have undergone rapid changes are known as “Human Developmental Accelerated Zones” (HARs). Scientists believe that at least some of these HARs may be responsible for the unique qualities that distinguish humans from their closest relatives such as chimpanzees and bonobos.

A team of researchers identified HARs almost two decades ago when comparing human and chimpanzee genomes. In a recent study, the team found that the three-dimensional folding of human DNA in the nucleus is a critical factor at this pivotal moment for our species.

To understand how these changes in human DNA came about, imagine a long scarf from the DNA of our last common ancestor with chimpanzees wrapped around your neck. Stripes of different colors run along its entire length.

Now imagine that someone is trying to make exactly the same scarf, but not quite the original pattern. Some stripes are narrower, some are wider, and some colors are in a different order than the original. When you wrap the new scarf around your neck in the same way as the original, the strips next to each other in the loop will no longer be the same.

Similarly, the essential difference between human and chimpanzee DNA is structural. Large pieces of the building blocks of DNA have been inserted, removed or rearranged in the human genome, causing human DNA to fold differently in the nucleus than other primate DNA.

The team investigated whether these structural changes in human DNA and its altered 3D folding could lead to certain genes being “captured” into HARs, linking them to different protein-coding genes than the ones they were originally attached to. Many genes within HARs are enhancers, that is, they increase the transcription of their associated gene/genes.

In their latest study, the team compared the genomes of 241 mammalian species using machine learning to analyze vast amounts of data. They identified 312 HARs and studied where they are located in the three-dimensional “neighbourhood” of folded DNA.

Nearly 30 percent of the HARs were located in areas of DNA where structural variations caused the human genome to fold differently from other primates.

The team also found that regions containing HARs are rich in genes that distinguish humans from our closest relatives, chimpanzees. In an experiment comparing DNA in growing human and chimpanzee stem cells, one third of the identified HARs were transcribed during the development of the human neocortex.

Many HARs play a role in embryonic development, especially in the formation of neural pathways associated with intelligence, reading, social skills, memory, attention, and focus, traits that are markedly different in humans from other animals. In HARs, these enhancer genes, unchanged for millions of years, may have had to adapt to their different target genes and regulatory domains.

Such dramatic changes in genome architecture could have profound implications for gene regulation and cellular function, which could help explain the extraordinary variety of traits that distinguish us from other primates.

The team is now studying how specific HARs contribute to the evolution of the human brain and how they interact with other genetic and environmental factors to shape individual differences in cognition and mental health.

Their ultimate goal is to shed light on the genetic basis of human uniqueness and to identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention in neuropsychiatric disorders thought to arise from the downregulation of gene networks involved in brain development and function.
