The design of the new BMWs continues to generate heated discussions among enthusiasts. Now, when a new model is unveiled, the first subject is the grille: will it be “XXL” like the Series 4 or the iX or will it be more traditional like the Series 3 or the Series 5 ?

It’s hard to say, especially because future BMWs will increasingly be “bold and distinctive”, according to Domagoj Dukec, the design manager of the German brand.

In recent months, Domagoj Dukec has repeatedly championed the brand’s new style and, in an interview with Coach, reaffirmed the direction taken by BMW in terms of style. The discussion revolved around the BMW i Vision Circular, a concept car presented at the Munich Motor Show that gives a first look at the design of future BMWs.

According to him, it is not enough to make “daring” cars: “Anyone is able to design an attractive model. On the other hand, if it lacks expressiveness or real meaning, it becomes an empty object.”.

Speaking of meaning, the launch of the i Vision Circular concept car marked the start of the “New Class”, a new slogan to identify the evolution of BMW through electrification, digitization and sustainability.

A special grille for each new model

The next BMWs will therefore focus on design, but also on their functionality. The most recent example given by the brand is the presence of the XXL grille on the new i4s and the iX SUV which, beyond the style, can also accommodate some elements essential to the technologies present in the vehicle, and in particular the driving assistance systems.

Each BMW will also have its own “character”. As designer Adrian Van Hooydonk points out, future models will have a grille that will vary in shape and size depending on the car’s personality. BMW is working hard on the preparation of the next generation of the 7 Series and the spies at Motor.es have managed to approach a camouflaged prototype of the luxurious car. It’s still heavily makeup, but the headlights are a bit more visible than before, so we can see their shape better. Yes, the 7 Series appears to have two-piece headlights.

The main light is mounted lower, on the front bumper, and appears to have two light modules for the low beams housed in a rectangle. The look of this generation promises to be very sharp, and we can’t help but notice that the license plate is unusually low, all the way down to the bumper. Previous test vehicles didn’t put it so close to the road, so we wonder what the point is.

The front fascia looks considerably sharper and lower than before, much like the 8 Series E31, while the side profile reveals flush door handles. In case you haven’t noticed, these white “handles” are fake since they are just stickers.

The rear of the car has visible areas that reveal the true color of the vehicle, a dark blue that can also be seen in the upper corners of the front bumper. The taillights have a wrap-around design and continue to the sides of the car. BMW will use an updated configuration of its CLAR platform for the upcoming 7 Series, whose petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains have already been confirmed. V12 will be retired, but you can be sure the engineers found a way to replace the M760i’s sweet 6.6-liter biturbo with something as good.

Not only the exterior will undergo significant changes, but the interior as well. The new 7 Series will receive BMW’s latest iDrive 8 with side-by-side screens incorporated into a single, slightly curved housing. Is a new M about to join the big sporty BMW family? Apparently yes. Judging by some spy photos taken in Germany, BMW would work on a sporty X1 to complete the range of its new model scheduled for mid-2022.

Elements that raise some questions

The name itself is already sparking discussion among enthusiasts. Indeed, this sporting X1 should not be considered as an M model as such, but rather as a kind of “primer” to the sports world of the Bavarian firm, as are the M135i, X2 M35i and other M235i.

And yet, the aesthetic treatment of this X1 seems to be sportier than that of its “sisters”. The most remarkable detail on the prototype, it is undoubtedly the presence of four exhaust outlets, a detail usually reserved for the most extreme BMWs like the M3 and M4. The prototype also carries a larger spoiler and a slightly different shield than those seen on other mules in recent months. However, the presence of camouflages does not allow us to discern all the aesthetic features.

The most powerful X1 ever?

If this X1 is indeed called “M35i”, we can expect the same engine as the other versions already present in the range of BMW. Thus, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder block developing 306 horsepower and 450 Nm de couple will be part of it, and associated with the xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. On the 1 Series, this powertrain can reduce 0 to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds and reach a maximum speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Currently, the most powerful version is the 220 hp xDrive 25e plug-in hybrid. In addition, the camber values ​​of the front wheels have been increased in order to optimize the absorption of lateral forces.

The M135i xDrive retains its mechanical limited-slip differential integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder still develops the trifle of 306 horsepower and 450 Nm de couple. BMW has also made changes to the engine’s artificial sound played through the cabin speakers. The mark specifies that the noise channeled inside was “carefully amplified”, although most fans will probably agree that this “system” must be removed completely.

Some new features have also been made to the color chart, with a new “Sao Paulo Yellow” color shown in the photos, or the addition of “Frozen Pure Gray” and “Frozen Orange” colors.
