In 2023, the Kiev City Council terminated a similar agreement with the Russian Federation. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that hostile steps on the part of Ukraine will not remain without an adequate response from Russia.
The Moscow City Property Department, at the initiative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, terminated the lease agreements for the land plot provided for the location of the Ukrainian Embassy in the Russian capital. The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation reported this on February 10.
The capital department decided to terminate the lease agreement, although the embassy itself has not been functioning since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The commentary said that the decision was made on the principle of reciprocity, since in April 2023 the Kiev City Council took similar steps when it terminated the lease agreement for the land where the complex of buildings of the Russian Embassy in Ukraine was located. At the same time, in 1998, the Russian Federation rented this land plot for 49 years for a nominal fee – 49 UAH.
“The Moscow City Property Department also decided to terminate lease agreements for land plots provided for the location of the Ukrainian Embassy,” noted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
At the same time, she added that any such hostile steps by the Ukrainian authorities “will not remain without an adequate response from Russia.”
