Alexander Syrsky: what is known about him
Alexander Syrsky was born on July 26, 1965 in the village of Novinki, Vladimir Region (RSFSR). He graduated from the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School, the Academy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Defense Academy of Ukraine. He was also the commander of the 72nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade and in 2013 became the first deputy head of the Main Command Center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Syrsky was the chief of staff of the ATO from the beginning of hostilities in the East of Ukraine. In the winter of 2015, he was one of the main commanders of the ATO forces during the battles for Debaltseve. In addition, he was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree, for the battles on the Debaltseve bridgehead.
In 2016, he headed the Joint Operational Headquarters of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which coordinated the operational actions of various Ukrainian military personnel in Donbass. In 2017, he became commander of the entire ATO.
Alexander Syrsky was the commander of the Joint Operational Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from May to August 2019, while he received the post of commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on August 5, 2019.
Full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine
Syrsky was the commander of the defense of Kyiv from the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion. Thanks to his organizational skills, two defense rings of Kyiv were created – one on the outer outskirts, and the other within the city. For the defense of the capital and the liberation of the north of Ukraine from the occupiers, he was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, II degree, and in April 2022 received the state award of Hero of Ukraine.
Alexander Syrsky was one of the commanders of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ counter-offensive against the Kharkiv region since the summer of 2022. According to the head of the GUR MOU Kirill Budanov in the film “The Year” by Dmitry Komarov, Syrsky’s idea of a counteroffensive arose when the enemy transferred part of his forces to the south of the country.
Later he became the commander of the OSV Khortitsa. Also from the fall of 2022 to the spring of 2023, he led the defense of Soledar and Bakhmut.

Alexander Syrsky is married and has two sons – Anton and Alexander.
