At the end of last May BMW presented the 8th generation of the 5 Series in a sedan body and since then we have been waiting for her revelations as well 5 seater station wagon. Now, the waiting is over.
The German brand revealed the 6th generation of the 5 Series Touringwhich is characterized by many digital innovationsadvanced systems – including for semi-autonomous driving and parking – and, for first timefrom purely electric versions.
In this way it wants to establish itself as one premium option in the upper part of the middle class, combining it elegancethem places but also her driving pleasure both in daily driving and on trips.
In relation to him her predecessorthe new 5 Series Touring is longer by 97 mm (length 5,060 mm), 32 mm wider (width 1,900 mm) and has increased height by 17 mm (1,515 mm). Besides with wheelbase 2,995 mm – which also grew by 20 mm – “boasts” that it has the largest spaces in the class.
Externally, the front has a modern interpretation of the double headlights of the brand but also of the characteristic mask, which also has, optionally lighting in its outline. On the side, the sporty design is emphasized by the large roof spoilerwhile the featured rear wheel arches and flat rear window highlight the large dimensions of the vehicle.
BMW has added three new colors for the bodywork, while in the standard equipment there are 18 and 19 inch alloy wheels for the purely electric as well as the plug-in hybrid versions. Moreover, there are various M packages which emphasize even more its dynamic character.
In the interioris dominated by single curved screen of BMW, which incorporates the 12.3 inch digital instrument panel and 14.9 inch screen of the system infotainment. At the same time, the premium atmosphere is enhanced by the new sports seats which are included in the standard equipment and the flat bottom steering wheel.
The new 5 Series Touring features vegan interior in its standard equipment, while optionally there are many options for them seat surfaces but also leather linings in several bicolors. The prospective buyer can add panoramic glass roof but also a Bowers & Wilkins Surround sound system with up to 18 speakers.
According to BMW, passengers have at their disposal more space overallwith an emphasis on the comfort of the rear passengers for the legsthem shoulders and the elbows their. The trunk has greater opening and a lower floor, making it easier to load large luggage. Its capacity starts from 570 lt and can reach up to 1.700 lt.
The driver is available multiple safety and driver assistance systemswhich include semi-autonomous driving but also (optional) system automatic parkingParking Assistant Professional. With it he can park his BMW through smartphone at a distance of up to 200m. The upgraded iDrive with an operating system BMW Operation System 8.5 offers top-notch features and plenty of connectivity options.
As for the powertrains, there are several options. With the its commercial launch – which gradually starts from Germany and other European countries May 2024 and the rest will follow next month – it will be offered to purely electric versions and to diesel engines.
Starting from the diesel optionsall of them combine with 48V mild hybrid system and 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. THE 520d and the four-wheel drive 520d xDrive have a 4-cylinder engine 2,0 L which yields 197 PS and 400 Nmwhile the electric motor offers 11 PS and 25 Nm. The summer of 2024 one more will be added to the range 6 cylinderin series, 3,0 L for the four-wheel drive version 540d xDrivealso with mild hybrid technology, resulting in overall power 299 PS and 670 Nm.
The two gasoline versionsthe rear wheel drive 530e and the four-wheel drive 530e xDrivewill be available from the summer and will be a plug-in hybrid. They will have 2 liter TwinPower Turbo 4 cylinder performance engine 190 PS and 310 Nm and electric motor 184 PS and 250 Nm. This is how it will turn out combined power of 299 PS (with temporary boost) and torque 450 Nm for both versions, which they will have 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The purely electric range will reach up to 96 km for the 530e and 89 km for the four-wheel drive variant.
The first electric 5 Series Touring
Of course, the show is stolen by debuting BMW i5 Touringwhich will initially be available on two versions with the commercial launch of the model. The introduction, rear-wheel drive, eDrive40 version shows 313 PS (340 PS in My Mode SPORT) and 400 Nm or even 430 Nm in Launch Control mode. For 0-100 km/h they need 6,1 sec. while the top speed is 193 km/h.
THE top version M60 xDrive is four-wheel drivewith an electric motor on each axle, with the result that the power “shoots” even at 601 PS with My Sport MODE (517 PS “normal”). Accordingly, the torque is 795 Nm but it can also reach the 820 Nm with Sport Boost or M Launch Control. The 0-100 km/h come in just 3,9 sec. while the top speed reaches 230 km/h.
THE battery has usable energy capacity 81,2 kWh in both versions, which offers autonomy from 483 km to 560 km in rear-wheel drive and 445 km to 506 km in the all-wheel drive i5. Charges in alternating current at speeds 11 kW but also (optional) 22 kWwhile in DC fast charger supports charging up to 205 kWwith the result to “fill” from the 10% to 80% to be needed 30 minutes.
