The deadline for payment of the 2024 traffic fees for all vehicles expires on February 29, 2024. However, from spring onwards, it will be on the table the debate on their readjustment.
According exclusive “Sunday Step” informationthe Ministry of Finance is going to set up a working groupin order to implementation of a new calculation method of traffic fees for a very important “portion” of IX.
The need for this change, always according to the specific report, arises from the reduced revenues that exist for the Ministry since the sale, in recent years, of many vehicles with modern anti-pollution technology. And while this is, of course, good for the environment, the same is not true for state revenues.
Based on the current system, road tax for vehicles that have been put into circulation for the first time since November 1, 2010 are calculated based on Pollutants. Thus, the new technology vehicles emit less exhaust gas and thus the amount paid by their owners is lower in relation to those that have a first marketing license until November 30, 2010. For the latter, fees are calculated based on engine displacement.
The newer a car is, the less fees it pays. For example, for vehicles with first registration from 1/1/2021 onwardsfees range from 0 to 2.85 €/gr of CO2 emissions. For those first released by 1/11/2010 to 31/12/2020the corresponding price ranges from 0 to 3.72 €/gr. On the contrary, for formerly IX, based on the cubic centimeters of their engines, fees start at €22 and reach up to €1,380.
Based on the specific information, target of the authorities it's not “punishment” of those who chose modern technology vehicles with lower emissions, but the appropriate readjustment of the calculation methodso that the system is fairerbut also the revenue target of 1.2 billion euros to continue to be achieved.
What is clear is that the owners of old, polluting vehicles (acquired in the 90s and 2000s) they are not going to see a reduction in road taxeven if in many cases the amounts are disproportionate to current value of their vehicles.
For specific owners, the process of providing incentives for withdrawal is considered of their cars and the acquisition of new, modern technology. However, this development depends on possibilities that will exist for the corresponding funds from the state budgetbut also how many vehicles will be affected by the specific measure.
