The need for imposing cars with a high driving position and an exuberant character is nothing new in the history of motoring, and thus the SUV was born, with BMW in this category to have created its own tradition and indeed with status symbol cars, which it identifies as SAV (Sport Activity Vehicles). And how could it be otherwise…
The huge acceptance by the buying public of SUVs created a panspermia of proposals, routine in some cases and more creative in a few, which stood out even if they received some challenge.
This is exactly what happened in 2008, when the BMW presented her X6, essentially the sports version of the successful X5 with a curvaceous body and the most muscular appearance. This decision can be described as successful, judging by the sales (500,000 vehicles), but also the difference it makes in the category, as well as the competition cars that followed…
The X6 xDrive 30d is a premium SUV that can make the most of the robustness of the power of the advanced 3-liter diesel engine in combination with the excellent frame in order to satisfy the driving libido, without necessarily being able to be characterized as the… GTi of SUVs.
As of today, the X6 follows the same genetic characteristics of its implementation as the X5, promising a distinct driving experience, aimed at a more enthusiastic audience. And indeed, that's exactly how it is judging by the renewed (LCI) X6 xDrive30d, which, as you rightly understood, incorporates a powerful diesel engine and a reliable four-wheel drive system, a combination that no “new class” car (see electrics) can match. compete in terms of driving feel and performance. Not to mention the autonomy, which can approach 1,000 km, proving that for this type of car there is no better choice than a modern Diesel, which when assisted by a – even – mild hybrid system, such as this version of X6, then things are even better.

Economy and performance
And here's what the language of numbers says about the 3 L engine (6-cylinder in-line, with steel pistons, two turbochargers and variable geometry vane, new common rail system with up to 12 injections per combustion cycle with pressure up to 2,500 bar), which is combined with a 48V mild hybrid set with a 12 PS electric motor integrated into the transmission system: Combined consumption of 7 lt/100 km, according to the WLTP standard, which is about the same as our measurement on a combined route (7.4 lt/100 km ). And all this for a beast whose body length approaches 5 m (total dimensions 4,960 X 2,004 X 1,700 m) and the weight exceeds 2 tons (2,295 kg). In terms of CO2 emissions, according to the WLTP standard, they are at 184 gr/100 km and, given the proportions, are considered low, as are the majority of modern diesel engines, as long as the specifications are met by the owners in terms of fuel maintenance and quality…
The engine is not only impressive in terms of environmental performance, but also performance, as it manages to move the heavy body with great comfort. Standard 0-100km/h comes in just 6.1sec with top speed topping out at 233km/h, almost effortlessly due to robust power and torque.
The combined output of the diesel engine and electric motor reaches 298 PS and 670 Nm, while the engine alone produces 286 PS/4,000 rpm and 650 Nm/1,500-2,500 rpm.
It is noticeable that these levels of torque only a modern electric motor can deliver, or even a high-performance petrol engine, but in no case in this low rev range…
Impressive performance is not the most important feature of the engine, but also the sound it produces. A nice bass timbre that doesn't remind you of something from a diesel engine, not even at low revs where it's almost silent.
The 8-speed automatic transmission (Steptronic) also contributes to the sporty feeling that the driver gets with its excellent scaling, response speed and general operation, even if it is set to operate at a higher speed, for the benefit of economy in consumption.
xDrive: a sophisticated four-wheel drive system
As the “xDrive” prefix suggests, the test X6 is four-wheel drive with a transmission ratio of 40% to the front wheels (dimensions 275/40/21) and 60% to the rear (dimensions 315/35/21) under normal conditions, having the ability through electronically controlled sensors transfer 100% to the rear axle (to reduce friction) even to a single wheel, if traction conditions dictate. In practice, the xDrive four-wheel drive system can ideally manage the brute force of the diesel engine, ensuring top-notch traction on any type of road surface.
It is clear, however, that a vehicle with these dimensions and body weight, as well as the type of tires, needs attention on slippery surfaces (snow, ice). On good asphalt, however, the X6 xDrive 30d is literally a… train on rails and despite its large dimensions it will turn comfortably on a route with demanding turns, such as the hairpins of Parnitha that we tested. On the highway, it goes without saying that it rides comfortably and straight (cx 0.31), with the air suspension on both axles (double-wishbone aluminum front, 5-link rear) setting the damping/grip ratio perfectly.
The sporty character of the car enhances the steering system (electrical assistance) which offers excellent information, while having the ability to “hide” the volume of the vehicle during maneuvers.
You get what you pay for
In any case, we are dealing with a car that 100% justifies the phrase “you get what you pay for” and in any case the more than €100,000 it costs (regardless of whether the €30,000 is taxes) is justified. It's not just the performance and driving feel that will delight passengers and driver, but also the overall experience inside, which defines the concept of a truly premium car from which absolutely nothing has been discounted. Top-shelf construction materials, top-notch assembly, high aesthetics and all of this harmoniously interconnected with modern applications in terms of comfort, safety, information and entertainment. Of course, digitization characterizes the dashboard of the renewed X6 with two large curved screens making the difference compared to before, 12.3 inches in diameter for the instrument panel and 14.9 inches for the touchscreen of the Infotainment system, with easy-to-use operation thanks in the new software (BMW OS 8.5), which also offers wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, etc.
In terms of space, the existence of a wheelbase of 2,975 mm leaves no room for complaints, as does the wide cabin, allowing the accommodation of even three passengers in the rear seat divided by 40/20/40, but they will have less height for their heads in relation to the X5 due to the sloping end of the roof, which also limits the opening of the luggage compartment (580 lt, 70 less than the X5).
Noteworthy is the X6's configuration system, which really transforms the X6 from a lazy SUV in the Comfort option, to a dynamic SUV in the Sport program, where the air suspension (combined with stiffens and lowers the body by 10 mm, eliminating lean in corners , the electric anti-roll bars counterbalance the body, the gearbox responds instantly and the xDrive four-wheel drive system has a more direct response ensuring supreme grip. Note here how the air suspension system automatically lowers the frame at speeds above 140 km/h, for the benefit of aerodynamics and consumption, while for approaching obstacles it can selectively increase the ground clearance by 20 mm (from 216 mm) and at speeds of up to 35 km/h.
The X6 xDrive 30d is a premium SUV that can make the most of the robustness of the power of the advanced 3-liter diesel engine in combination with the excellent frame in order to satisfy the driving libido, without necessarily being able to be characterized as the… GTi of SUVs. To the above, add BMW's vast experience in demanding constructions, which leaves no room for doubt. An executive vehicle with an elitist character, which justifies its Bavarian origin and – why not – and the money you will have to spend to get it…
