One could say that the Polo is a model that needs no special introduction. It is a reference point, we could say that it almost established its category, being today one of the longest-running superminis on the market, a model that, almost half a century after its launch, is not only established, but has also grown has evolved into a vehicle that can be not only a family's second car but also the first! And this, if you like, can also be seen from its dimensions. So if you compare the length of the current Polo with the length of the first generation Golf (4,074 mm vs. 3,705 mm!) you won't need long to understand that the current small Volkswagen is longer than its small and medium model, which has historically been the it played the role of the main family car.
Top spaces, high practicality
How the car classes have changed over time is of course a long story – what is important to say in the case of today's Polo is that on the one hand by utilizing these external dimensions it has managed to offer class-leading spaces with as a result it is now clear that you will hardly find a car in the class that offers such spaces in the back seat for tall passengers, just as you will also hardly find a car in the class with a larger trunk. And note that this class-leading luggage compartment not only has a double floor, but also hides a full-sized spare under its floor – which is a great asset for a car in an era when almost all manufacturers have come up with the solution of the wheel repair kit in order to offer more liters for your trunks, but also to reduce costs and weight of the vehicle.
The interesting and at the same time beautiful in the case of the Polo is not that it offers “simply” top spaces, but also that in these spaces they are configured in such a way that they create an environment that makes movement easier. We are talking about the number of places for small and large objects found inside, about the side pockets in the doors that can also fit a large water bottle (the front ones), about the convenient console, etc.
Overall, we're talking about a car that certainly has a lot to show in the practicality and ergonomics department with an easy-to-read and multi-configurable fully digital instrument cluster that our test car had (standard on the base version). Sure, some complaints could be made about the infotainment screen (in relation to how easy it is to use its menu) – but that's about it!
Performance and comfort
And having given the mark on the transport capabilities of pain, it's time to talk about the drive system which in this particular case includes the well-known 1000-horsepower three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine from Volkswagen, in a version that produces 95 hp, and a very interesting gearbox dual clutch DSG-7, with seven transmission ratios. Almost two decades after the launch of the first DSG, the Volkswagen Group is putting such gearboxes in almost all its models with great success – and this certainly applies to the Polo as well. This is a transmission characterized by the characteristic immediacy of gear changes, by the quick downshift when the driver decisively presses the accelerator, but also by the immediate response to the driver's commands. We note at this point that on the one hand there is the possibility of choosing between normal and sport mode (so the gearbox holds each gear for longer, so that the engine can work at higher revs and have better accelerations) and on the other hand the driver is offered the possibility of manual changes either with the help of the basic selector (commonly known as the “lever”) of gears, or with the help of the very discreetly placed on the steering wheel – but particularly practical lever switches (paddles). In this case, i.e. in the case of manual/serial changes, the response of the box is immediate allowing the driver to have full control of the car.
While the fact that the transmission in question has seven gears is an element that helps the engine to perform even better, covering any gaps that may exist at low revs. We remind you that the three-cylinder engine of one liter has sufficient power to move the car quickly, however below 2,000 rpm it is not at its best. Well-balanced and progressive, without sudden reactions, is the driving behavior – and this is an element that inspires confidence in the driver who can move quickly when he finds the right path. At the same time, the suspension generally offers good comfort, but without claiming laurels in this area.

With my hand in my wallet, it's time to talk about the build quality on the one hand and the equipment on the other. In the first area, and although one cannot accuse the Polo of a lack of robustness, the extensive use of hard plastics in the door trims – and not only – (thankfully the dashboard is now covered in soft material) one cannot say that ” inspire” in particular.
On the other hand note that the standard equipment includes among others the Digital Cockpit (digital instrument panel with configuration options), Infotainment Composition system with 6.5 inch screen, 2 x USB-C front and 2 x USB-C rear for charging up to 45W .
Also, 6 airbags, electric folding and heated exterior mirrors, electric front / rear windows, 185/65 R15 tires and a normal size spare, LED front headlights for medium and high beam with LED daytime running lights, fog lights with static cornering light function, system Start-Stop with energy recovery system during braking, as well as the advanced driver safety / assistance systems Driver Alert (driver fatigue recognition system), Front Assist (environmental monitoring system) with City Emergency Braking (emergency braking system), Lane Assist (active lane keeping system), pedestrian & bicycle monitoring system, Hill Start Assist (hill start assist system) etc.
So we see that a rich package is offered in which we detect an incomprehensible lack: that of the parking radar and/or the reversing camera. However, this cannot alter the overall positive impression that the Polo automatic created for us, which given the general “turmoil” in the car market and the increased prices we have been faced with in recent years, is a very reasonable purchase that will satisfy the head of the family – especially if he moves mainly in an urban environment.
