The handover ceremony of the road axis “Aktio – Amvrakia” took place, in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The handover ceremony of the road axis “Aktio – Amvrakia” took place, in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Infrastructure, Nikos Tahiaou, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transports, Christina Alexopoulos and the General Secretary of Infrastructures Constantinos Magoulas.
The “Aktio-Ambrakia” road axis directly connects the Ionian Road (from A.K. Amvrakia) with the airport of Aktio, the undersea tunnel of Aktio, the port of Igoumenitsa via the Preveza-Igoumenitsa road, and the junction to Lefkada , bypassing the city of Amfilochia. The citizen will drive on a modern and safe highway. It will take about 3 hours and 20 minutes to travel by road from Athens to Lefkada, saving 45 minutes on the way”, stressed the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Staikouras in his speech.
The highway “Aktio-Ambrakia” has a total length of 49 km, with 2 traffic lanes in each direction. It belongs to the Hellenic Trans-European Network A52. The delivery of the entire project to traffic achieves the reduction of the current distance by 13 km and mainly replaces a 62 km road with reduced geometric characteristics from a closed motorway. Travel time from Athens to Lefkada and Preveza is reduced by approximately 45 minutes.
The “Aktio-Ambrakia” highway consists of two traffic lanes in each direction, each 3.5 meters wide, one guidance lane in each direction, 0.5 meters wide and a central dividing island with a two-sided parapet with the corresponding guidance lanes 2 meters wide, i.e. it has a total width of 17 meters.
The project also includes the construction of side and vertical roads, two large valley bridges of approximately 200 meters each and three smaller stream bridges, nine interchanges (eight uneven and one level), as well as overpasses and underpasses. In addition, with this contract, the road section connecting the end of the Aktio-Ambrakia road axis with the Ionian Road, approximately 500 meters long, was constructed at the beginning of the road axis in question.
Modern technical specifications, as well as special technical solutions, have been applied to the project. Examples include the application of the vibrating replacement method, the use of LED lighting fixtures in the street lighting of the project to save energy, the use of modified asphalt to limit future maintenance needs, and the support of excavated sloping trenches.
The “Aktio-Ambrakia” road axis, with a budget of 160 million euros, is part of the priority axis “Trans-European Road Network and Road Safety” of the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructures, Environment and Sustainable Development” 2014 – 2020. The contracting company METKA, of “Mytileneos S.A.” took over the project in November 2020. The new highway will be handed over to traffic by the weekend, after the removal of heavy vehicles from the construction sites.
During the current year, the Vonitsa-Lefkada and Aktio-Agios Nikolaos connections will be completed, completing the route of the connection to Lefkada. By Easter, the Lamia-Kalambaka section of the Central Greece E65 highway, with a total length of 136 km, will be delivered. By the end of the year, it is estimated that approximately 80% of the new Patras-Pyrgos highway, 75 km long, will be completed. The start is also marked construction of a section of the road axis Lamia-Amfissa-Antirrio and the promotion of the procedures for the construction of a section of the road axis Lamia-Karpenissi-Agrinio.
