Volvo Trucks has prepared a completely new 17-liter D17 diesel engine for its flagship FH16 model. In the top version it develops 780 hp. With. and 3800 Nm, which makes it the most powerful on the long-haul tractor market.
The engine received a highly efficient turbocharger, patented pistons and a wave-shaped combustion chamber, as well as a new injection system.
The D17 engine will be available in three versions: 600 hp. With. (3000 Nm), 700 l. With. (3400 Nm) and 780 l. With. (3800 Nm). All of them are certified to run on HVO biofuel (hydrotreated vegetable oil), and the 700-horsepower version also runs on biodiesel. For the top-end unit with an impressive maximum torque, the automatic transmission has been modified.
Sales of tractors with the new engine will start this summer, and its production for the markets of Europe and Australia will begin in the second half of the year. The D17 engine will be available for the latest generation FH16 model, including the FH16 Aero version that debuted the other day, on January 29.
