French farmers are blocking the highways, the increase in fuel prices has not passed
Angry farmers have been protesting across France in recent weeks. The country is a major agricultural producer, but local entrepreneurs face declining incomes, red tape and environmental policies that they say are undermining their ability to compete with other states. Hundreds of tractors rolled into Paris in an attempt to draw attention to these problems.
Why are French farmers on alert? The issue of raising the price of fuel, specifically diesel for agricultural purposes, also became a trigger, although the government has since backed down from the plan. Further concessions are also expected.
In response to farmers who threatened to “siege” Paris, the government prepared and ordered the deployment of 15,000 police officers. The lawmen are said to have a clear order to prevent any attempts to invade Paris itself. Politicians are trying to prevent the spread of discontent among farmers ahead of June's European Parliament elections, seen as a key test for President Emmanuel Macron's government.
