Tesla Model Y is not only the best selling car of 2023 in Europe but also worldwide.
Tesla is going to take the crown as the car with top selling in the world in 2023with the Model Y securing the top spot in the majority of global markets.
Despite only being founded in 2003, the electric vehicle manufacturer from Palo Alto has been challenging a cosmogenic, one might say, change in the global automotive chessboard, creating an electric model that surpassed its counterparts and broke all records to make it the first EV to lead the global market.
With a small number of markets yet to announce their sales figures for 2023, preliminary data collected by JATO Dynamics shows that the Model Y has a clear lead, with 1.23 million units sold between January and December 2023 – a 64% year-over-year increase over 2022.
The Model Y led sales in both Europe as well as in China, the two largest electric vehicle markets in the world. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), more than 456.000 units of the model were made available in China in 2023 – marking a 45% increase over 2022.
In Europe, Model Y sales have surpassed those of models such as the Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208 and VW T-Roc. Data from 30 markets shows that more than 255.000 units of the Model Y – that's 19,000 vehicles more than the second most popular vehicle, the Dacia Sandero.
It is worth noting here that the average retail price of a Tesla Model Y in November 2023 was 18% and 23% lower than the average cost of an EV in Germany and the US respectively. Price cuts over the course of the year, if anything, contributed to high demand for the American company's e-SUV.
Tesla Model Y dethrones Toyota
According to preliminary data, 2023 will mark the “end of an era” for Toyota as the global model sales leader.
So, behind the Model Y, the second best-selling vehicle in 2023 is expected to be the Toyota RAV4, with 1.07 million units – from 1.02 million in 2022 – when it was leading the global market. With all body types in its quiver, the Corolla occupies third place in the ranking for 2023, with 1.01 million sales last year.
