We wrote it in the case of the BMW M2 and the same thoughts come now, behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC. So, in an age where the pleasure of driving is considered unnecessary, there are a few companies that persist (rightly) in still producing models that have that something extra. These elements will make you smile even on the way back from work, but also make you feel “alive” on a twisty route. All of us who grew up with the “part” of the car, know that an intense ride is better than 10 visits to the psychologist, so the value of models that can offer you such thrills is now priceless.
Even more charming
Mercedes-Benz renewed the A-Class and at the same time did not forget to renew the AMG versions. The joy for us is great, since given the opportunity we have the renewed A 35 in our hands. The changes on paper are not many, something logical, since it was already a very complete car. Externally, the new bumpers, the mask with the vertical stripes, the new lights, the round AMG logo, but also the wheels with a new design stand out. It remains sporty and dynamic, yet doesn't become provocative with huge spoilers, and that's something we like. In the interior, the updated screens of the MBUX system stand out (beautiful detail the graphics of the engine revolutions that resemble flames!), but also the AMG Performance steering wheel.

Without being burdened with the weight of the crown, since this role is played by the A 45 AMG, the little one of the family wins you over with its homogeneity, but also its temperament. The engine is not pushed to the limit. It delivers 306 PS at 5,800 rpm, but the secret lies in the overall performance. It pulls hard from idle and up to the rev limit helping the driver to move nimbly, even when the throttle is not pressed deep. The experience is flattered by the mild hybrid technology found in the rest of the new A-Class range. It has a 48 Volt electrical circuit and a starter-dynamo (RSG) that supports quick starting with an additional 10 kW power. The renewal in the mechanical parts is completed by the new engine radiator, which improves temperature management during extreme driving. All in all, this is one of the best turbocharged petrol engines up to 2,000cc.
The joy of driving is still here
One engine, however, is not enough to create a harmonious whole. The chassis is extremely stiff and seems apathetic, even when you're pushing it to the limit. The suspension is firm, but you can feel it working with the road surface to maximize traction. We would, however, like a bit more ground clearance for Greek roads. The four-wheel drive also contributes, in its turn, so that the torque of 400 Nm is always efficiently transferred to the road, while the brakes are fantastic to the eye, as well as in performance. Whether you're driving in the city, on the open road, or on some twisty route, the A 35 is a great companion. It adapts to your mood through the driving profiles that you can choose from the rotary control located on the new AMG Performance steering wheel. At first glance, it resembles a steering wheel from F1 with the various options it gives the driver. However, in practice it takes some getting used to, since the functions are probably more than you would want for the road.
Where you really pay off, though, is on a traffic-free route. What if the A35 is the smallest model of the AMG range! It manages to fill your memory with wonderful images full of tension and adrenaline. You choose the Sport program and you feel as if you are carrying a gun. Straight line performance is excellent, accompanied by a great sonic crescendo, punctuated by artificial sound, but at the end of the day it doesn't bother us. Especially at a time when our electric cars tout complete quietness as the ultimate good. By picking up the pace, it becomes an extension of you. Direct in changes of direction, with a good feel from the controls, but also a strong feeling of security.
Generally neutral, even with the electronics off, it will oversteer mostly if you ask it to, either with the steering wheel or the throttle. The pace can become blistering based on rationality and somewhere in there you wonder if there is a reason for something even faster for street use. It can comfortably maintain a fast pace in the National, while with the Comfort program it proves that it can also be quiet, a useful element on long journeys. You come home and the only thing certain is that you are full. You don't want anything else. You're just waiting for dawn to hit the A 35 again!
The Mercedes-AMG A 35 is the best hot hatch we've driven this year. It combines in an excellent way the virtues of a practical and collected hatchback, the top quality of Mercedes with the feeling of driving. A multi-talented model who lacks nothing. The most important thing, however, is that without concessions in everyday life you can be filled with intense moments, which are becoming more and more rare these days.
