IVECO Group has announced the selection of BASF, a major supplier of chemicals to the automotive industry, as the first partner to offer a recycling solution for the Group's lithium-ion electric vehicle batteries. The solution is part of the Iveco Group's circular economy strategy, which follows the 4R principle – repair, refurbishment, reuse and recycling – to extend the life of batteries while reducing their overall environmental impact.
BASF, which recently opened Europe's first battery component production and recycling center in Schwarzheide, Germany, will manage the entire recycling process for lithium-ion batteries used in IVECO's electric vans, buses and trucks.
The agreement includes the collection, packaging, transport and recycling of batteries in various European countries, including France, Germany and the UK. Once collected, BASF will mechanically process the batteries into a black mass from which critical raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium can be recovered and recovered for use in the production of new batteries.
In this way, BASF is organizing the complete battery recycling value chain in Europe to provide low-carbon recycled metals locally for the battery industry.
